Do’s and Don’ts of Web Design By: Cassandra VanHumbeck

Do Choose a simple background. It won’t be distracting. Don’t Choose a busy background. It will be too distracting and hard on the eyes.

Do Choose a colour of font that is easy to read. It shouldn’t be the same as the colour of the background. Don’t Choose a colour of font that is hard to read. Bright colours or matching the background makes it hard to read.

Do Choose a font that is easy to read. If your visitor can’t read the font, they won’t know what the website is about. Don’t Choose a font that is hard to read. If your visitor can’t read the font, they won’t know what the website is about. I will be posting updates daily.  

Do Make the font big enough to read easily. This will make navigation easier. Don’t Make the font too small. If it’s too small, it will take a lot of effort to read. This website is a place to share photos with your friends and family.

Do Choose photos that represent what your website is about. They will interest the visitor and help explain the website’s purpose. Don’t Choose random photos that don’t represent what your website is about. They will confuse the visitor and mislead them. Emma’s Sports Articles

Do Keep the amount of text on the home page minimal. It should inform the visitor of what the website contains. Don’t Have a lot of text on the home page. Long paragraphs on the home page will bore the visitor, and may confuse them. Emma’s Sports Articles I will be posting updates of the school’s sports games weekly. Come check them out! Emma’s Sports Articles Hi, my name is Emma. I made this website to post the different events of the sports teams at my school. I’m hoping that lots of people will read my website and enjoy it…

Do Have a search box on your home page. If your visitor is looking for one specific thing, this will make it much easier for them. Don’t Make the visitor search through dozens of pages and paragraphs to find the information they are looking for. They will get bored or give up if it’s too hard to find.

Do Have your contact information on the website. If the visitor wants to contact you to ask a question or to request your services, they’ll need to know how to contact you. Don’t Tell your visitors to contact you, then leave no information. The visitor won’t know how to, then will find a different website and use their services.

Do Have links that lead to actual pages or websites. Having links can simplify the main page of your website, but only if they actually work. Don’t Have links that are broken, or not have any links at all. When a visitor clicks on a link and it doesn’t lead to anything, it’s very frustrating and they won’t be able to find the information they’re looking for.

Don’t Have lots of pop up advertisements in your website. They are annoying to your visitor and make your website less appealing. Do Use advertisements on your website sparingly. They may help you get funds, but they`re a distraction to your viewer, making them not pay attention to the actual information on your page.

Do Have a mobile version of your site. Nowadays, almost everyone accesses the internet on their mobile devices. If your website is easily accessed on these devices, your visitors can check up on the website while on the go. Don’t Have the computer monitor version of your website appear on your visitors phones. It will be very hard to navigate and the text will be very small. Although you can zoom in, it`s a pain and your visitors won`t like it.

Do Update your website regularly. It keeps your visitors informed of the changes or additions to your page. It will also keep the visitor interested, and they will visit your page more often to check on updates. Don’t Leave your website for long periods of time without updating it. You could be giving your visitor false information, and not informing them of changes you’ve made.
