1 Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM)
StruxureWare Data Center Operation StruxureWare Data Center Expert Welcome to Schneider Electric’s overview of Data Center Infrastructure Management or DCIM, where focus is on StruxureWare Data Center Operation and StruxureWare Data Center Expert

2 Data center management challenges
Data Center Availability IT Productivity Risk Management Uptime and Service Levels Business Efficiency Capital Cost Management Operational Cost Management Energy Cost Management Carbon Emissions Impact The Data Center Manager faces many challenges, but it boils down to two main issues: Availability and Efficiency. Under those two categories fall several issues: Data Center Availability: Uptime and Service Levels, Risk Management & IT Productivity Business Efficiency: Carbon Emissions Impact, Energy Cost Management, Operational Cost Management, Capital Cost Management The Data Center Manager needs to balance those two issues, and make the choice of which level of efficiency he wants to achieve and availability he wants to provide. Balance the demands of availability and efficiency through out the data center lifecycle

3 In an environment of constant change
Increasing availability expectations Cloud computing Virtualization Energy efficiency Infrastructure management Uncertain planning for capacity or density Energy and service cost control Regulatory requirements Dynamic power variation In addition to the desire to understand and control the costs, there are also some substantial challenges that many companies are facing today in the data centre: Regulatory requirements: …forcing unusual structural changes, partitioning of equipment, isolating it physically and providing certain levels of physical-access security around the equipment. Uncertain long-term plans for capacity or density: I have a number of data centre operators who tell me stories like “They told me what was going to be in this facility; I built it; only one third of what they told me is actually what ended up here. The other two thirds are things that weren’t even on the radar screen when I started this project. How am I supposed to design for that?… you know, I was trying to design to the circuit level – the branch circuit level in this facility – and they can’t even tell me a year ahead what’s going to be there and what’s going plug into it.” Increasing energy cost: People are looking at those bills and saying “ What can I do to get these under control or reduce them over time?” Increasing power density: This is one of the biggest subjects of critical importance to people today because it’s so destabilizing as far as data centre design goes. The new densities we’re talking about, as we all know, are an order of magnitude greater than the densities in typical data centres today. In response to all of these issues, APC contends that a radical change is required in the way we approach data centre planning & operation. We need to take a holistic view of this problem. The old way – trying to make products better on a product-by-product basis -- just isn’t going to get us there. What we need to do is… Create systems that adapt to changing requirements Systematically drive out the main cause of downtime: Human error Integrate power, cooling, and rack into a single management architecture Empower IT professionals to design, operate, and manage their physical infrastructure – and forecast and plan into the future, and not just rely on guesswork and gut feeling. Metrics and reporting Server consolidation Data center managers need accurate and timely information to make better decisions in real time

4 DCIM Market Definition
Data center infrastructure management (DCIM) systems collect and manage data about a data center’s assets, resource use and operational status throughout the data center lifecycle. This information is then distributed, integrated, analyzed and applied in ways that help managers meet business and service-oriented goals and optimize the data center’s performance Schneider Electric’s definition of Data Center Infrastructure Management. Physical Functional Process Asset management Availability management Capacity management Change management Crisis management Financial management, Integrations Power system Cooling system IT space Security integrations Monitoring and alarming Automation and control Modeling and simulation Software Services, Integrations

5 DCIM maturity model 0% 5% 30% 80% 95%
Level 5: Self optimizing, autonomic Multiple IT and infrastructure subsystems integrated; data models used for prediction, service management, multiple views, optimizing in near real time. 0% Level 4: Optimizing Multiple IT and infrastructure subsystems integrated; data models used for prediction, service management, multiple views, optimizing in near real time. 5% Level 3: Proactive Datacenter equipment characteristics, location and operational status tracked. Energy and environmental data used to reduce risks, waste. 30% Level 2: Reactive Software installed to monitor environment and equipment power use. Ability to adjust cooling to demand. A company adopting DCIM is likely to go through different maturity stages when deploying management software. Starting from the bottom with no integrations and only basic monitoring, to moving all the way to the top, where the management software has enabled a self optimizing and autonomic environment, and where no silos exist between the different systems. It is vital to understand and map customer maturity before approaching them and positioning a DCIM solution to them. 80% Level 1: Basic No integration; basic monitoring supplied with equipment. Health and safety. 95%

6 Data Center Infrastructure
Business Value Applications Virtual Machines Virtualization Management Hypervisor DEMAND SUPPLY IT hardware DEMAND SUPPLY Data Center Infrastructure Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) In order to understand data center management we need to understand the context – where does data centre management reside and which other systems does it connect to. Let’s have a look at this stack describing what is needed in order for software applications to deliver business value to your company. At the top, we have applications in place running your company’s critical processes. These run on virtual machines, that run on a hypervisor, that runs on IT hardware. The hardware is supported by a data center infrastructure, which is supported by the building and the power from the utility plant. All this is in place to deliver business value. (move animation) Traditionally, the distinction between supply and demand has been between the data center infrastructure and IT hardware. (move animation) With virtualization management such as VMware taking care of the IT hardware, the hypervisor, the virtual machines and the applications. (move animation) And data center infrastructure management taking care of the physical infrastructure. (move animation again) As more and more applications are virtualized, it is predicted that the IT hardware will be percieved as part of the supply side and following 451 groups definition, the DCIM system will also grow into managing the IT hardware. (move animation twice) To quote Michael Dell – the data center will become the computer. Building Utility

9 Expected marked growth (1)
“Overall, The 451 Group believes that the DCIM market is worth around $240m in 2011, and will grow to $1.2bn in 2016.” ” DATACENTER INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE”, Andy Lawrence , The 451 Group, May 2011 According to the 451 Group, the DCIM market is worth around $240m in 2011, growing to $1.2bn in 2016 – which means about 40% increase in market size per year on average.

10 Expected marked growth (2)
“DCIM tools and processes will become mainstream in data centers, growing from 1% penetration in 2010 to 60% in 2014.” ”DCIM: Going Beyond IT” David J. Cappuccio, Gartner March 2010 Gartner has noted that they expect DCIM to grow from a 1% penetration rate in data centers in 2010 to 60% in 2014. So, DCIM is an immature category, its developing, but has not yet shown its full potential, and with the low penetration rate but steep increases expected there are plenty of opportunities

11 Schneider a leader in the DCIM market
“According to IDC analysis and buyer perception, Schneider Electric is an IDC MarketScape Leader worldwide.” ”IDC: MarketScape: Worldwide Datacenter Infrastructure Management (DCIM) 2011 Vendor Analysis” Katherine Broderick, IDC January 2012 In January 2012 Schneider Electric was named an IDC MarketScape Leader worldwide, ahead of the competition.

12 Business Benefits It is difficult to achieve the more advanced levels of datacenter maturity, or of datacenter effectiveness generally, without extensive use of DCIM software (451 Group, 2011) Energy savings from well-managed data centers can reduce operating expenses by as much as 20% (Gartner, 2010) One integrated system bridging the gap between Facilities and IT Plug’n’Play data center key performance indicators on web and smart phone dashboards Typical solution payback is less than 12 months Why bother with DCIM? Both the analyst groups and actual numbers speak for the implementation of DCIM in data centers – in order to both optimize operations, save energy and last but not least – save money. DCIM provides a common ground for facilities and IT – and one system for all to use. DCIM provides KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to publish on the web – easy to understand and interpret for the management layer And the main benefit – the DCIM solution will have paid for itself in less than 12 months through savings and data center availability.
