8 2014 Institutes and Centers Census & Survey 294 primary focus on energy and climate change (72 in survey sample) 160 broad focus on environment/sustainability (57 in survey sample) 819 other categories: natural systems, societal systems, human- wellbeing, technology and informatics, built environment Broad focus and energy/climate change more likely to be institutes at the primary university level (directors report to top administration) About a third administer academic programs 59% of activities focused on research, 25% education, 15% outreach/continuing education, 12% campus sustainability, 33% other (commercialization, technical services, etc.)
