1 European Empires This PowerPoint is 37 slides long.
DO NOT waste your time working on this PowerPoint. You will be taking a lot of important notes and answer a lot of questions that you will see on the test. Myself or Mr. Lakes will shut down the talking if you are not working on the assignment.

2 Directions Take notes on the European empires and use the PowerPoint to color your world map to show where the empires were Make sure to write down everything written in BLUE in your notes Answer all questions in your notes as well please. 3 ENGLAND Even though British explorers successfully found Canada in 1497, under the rule of King Henry VII, no attempt to establish a colony was made at that time. Under Elizabeth I (Henry VII’s granddaughter) Rivalry between England and Spain English privateers (PIRATES) attacked Spanish ships and ports and stole their treasures

4 British America 1607 – Jamestown was England’s first colony (eventually became Virginia) Virginia was the first of 13 British colonies The Caribbean colonies were the most important : Sugar plantations Dependent on slave labor

5 Other British Colonies
The British sent their criminals to Australia because their prisons were too crowded They eventually found gold in Australia as well This caused non-criminals to move to Australia India was a huge British colony. The British were able to trade lots of spices because of this colony Britain had control of Hong Kong in China for many many years

6 “The Sun never sets” After colonizing areas in four continents, the British Empire became the largest empire in history! It was often said that “The sun never sets on the British Empire” because it was so big that the sun was always shining on at least one of its colonies!

8 FRANCE France had two different empires Quebec (Canada)
The first was in the Americas ( ) The second was in Africa & Asia (1830 – 1960) Quebec (Canada) Permanent fur trading post The French people wanted fur Canadians wanted metal, guns, alcohol and clothing

9 The fall of the French Lost Quebec in the Seven Years War to Britain in 1763 Sold North American holdings to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

11 Portugal’s Empire With the help of Prince Henry the Navigator, Portugal was able to bring in lots of goods while trading with Asia All the money coming from this trade got Portugal interested in how else they could make money Sailing along Africa’s coast, they began buying people to use as slaves Portuguese sailors and traders realized they could sell these slaves for a lot of money to colonizers

12 Did Portugal start slavery?!
African’s were kidnapping people from other tribes and selling them to the Europeans for money, weapons, and goods.

14 BRAZIL!!!!! Brazil was Portugal’s largest and most profitable colony
In Brazil, Portugal made money from cash crops Cash crops are foods that grow in the ground that sell for a lot of money Brazil’s cash crops are: sugar, coffee, oranges, cocoa and tobacco

Gold being the main thing they explored and colonized to get

17 Conquistadors A conquistador is a Spanish soldier and explorer
They discovered new things and killed along the way Conquistadors killed thousands of Native Americans while searching for gold Mainly in Mexico and Central America

29 Militarism Building up of strong armed forces and a powerful military. Before World War I tension and rivalry amongst European nations led European countries to expand their army and navy in preparation for war.

31 Alliances An agreement or promises to defend and help another country.
In the early 1900’s, nations feared one another. Each nation was afraid another would invade or try to take over its territory. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies.

33 Imperialism   Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries, and controls their government, economy, and culture.

35 Nationalism Strong pride in your country, and willing to defend it at any cost. .
