1 “Using of remote sensing and GIS for forest monitoring as contribution to sustainable forest management in Vietnam” Prepared by Dr. Nguyen Phu Hung Deputy Director General of Forest Inventory and planning Institute of Vietnam HANOI, September 17-18th 2012

2 + Sustainable forest management (SFM) is the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable development. + Sustainable forest management uses very broad social, economic and environmental goals. + A range of forestry institutions now practice various forms of sustainable forest management and a broad range of methods and tools are available that have been tested over time.

3 The stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that:
Maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfill, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions, at local, national, and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other ecosystems.

4 Key elements of sustainable forest management
The seven thematic areas are: 1+ Extent of forest resources 2+ Biological diversity 3+ Forest health and vitality 4+ Productive functions and forest resources 5+ Protective functions of forest resources 6+ Socio-economic functions 7+ Legal, policy and institutional framework.

5 GIS and Remote Sensing can be use for monitoring and identify follow thematic area:
Remote sensing can identify and monitor: 1+ Forest resources 2+ Biological diversity 3+ Forest health and vitality 4+ Productive forest resources 5+ Potential protective functions of forest resources

6 GIS AND REMOTE SENSING CAN BE USED FOR MONITORING OF FOREST AREA’S CHANGING

7 Overview Satellite images for using

11 MAP OF FOREST IN 2011 Forest cover: 39.7% (13,515,064 ha) In which:
- Natural forest ha - Plantation ha

12 Monitor the Special used Forest System in Vietnam
+ Total areas of special used forest: about 2,3 mil. ha with 32 national Parks 120 conservation’ areas + Protected forest areas: about 6 mil. Ha + About 8 mil. ha production forest. Forest Inventory and Planning Institute(FIPI)

18 GIS AND REMOTE SENSING CAN BE USED FOR ESTABLISHING OF FOREST PROTECTION AND DEVELOPMENT PLAN AS WELL AS FOREST MANAGEMENT PLAN

19 Forest map for Establishing of Forest development plan
1/ Establishing of three categories of forest in Vietnam Protection Forest Special used Forest Production Forest By the identifying the forest protection areas, GIS was used for Establishing the thematic maps like soil map, elevation map, DTM maps, Rainfall map… - Overlay this thematic map for identify the cruised areas for water and soil erosion… and identify the protection forest areas.

20 2/ Establishing of for sustainable management plan like planning of cutting and harvesting areas. 3/ Identify the potential CDM Project (JICA) 4/ Identify the forest and biomass lost by using of land sat Images for difficulty entrained areas (in Bach Ma National Park) 5/ Identify the shifting cultivation’s areas 6/ Establishing the optimal schedules for the planting of forest tree in deferent ecological zone of Vietnam

21 7/ Establishing of Land use map for planning 8/ Constructing of forest roads 9/ Monitoring of forest use from farmer or land user 10/ Identify of forest fire (using of Modis) 11/ Establishing sustainable forest management for SFE like Madrak’s SFE in West high land of Vietnam

22 Forest maps for Establishing of Forest management plan
Map based on quickbird map based on Landsat image Planting areas Cutting area

23 Spot 5 images for monitoring of forest statutes of Farmer- land user

24 Interpretation with the help of eCognition

25 Overlay of forest type map with land land-user map

26 Information about land user an forest type

27 Information about land user an forest type

28 CONCLUSION 1/ With the development of new technology allow us to using it for contribution to sustainable forest management by establishing of Forest map to make optimizing land using in forest sector. 2/ GIS brings high qualities of results with high accuracy information and reducing the labor cost especial in the difficulty entrained areas like high mountainous areas. 4/ The high solution satellite images give the good chance to monitor our forest at all level from national to local level event household level. 5/ With the reducing the cost of satellite images and software as well as open sources give the developing countries to use it for more contribution of GIS and Remote sensing for sustainable development of our forest./.
