Masters in Reading Online Program Development and Clinical Experience

Background Edinboro has always had a Graduate Reading Program. We currently run an on-campus clinic each Fall semester and each summer. The online program includes all of the same courses and prerequisites and projects as the on-campus program.

EUP Approval Process In order to run the online program, we needed to obtain: Departmental approval  February 2003 University Curriculum Committee  April 2003 University Senate Approval  May 2003

Summer 2003 Links to online courses created and sequence of program posted. Posted on EUP Homepage Enrollment Multiple emails and communications with  Students  Graduate Office Acceptance and Welcome Letters are sent out.

We have students, participating in the program, who are traveling from many states.

Each cohort was brought on campus for an orientation prior to the program start date. The students logged into the first course and they had their questions answered. We now do this in a virtual orientation.

They receive program information and they learn how to access the library and get help with technical difficulties.

Students begin the program and take 12 hours of courses prior to coming to campus for the clinical experience.

During the clinical, the students are taking a five week course: READ 712. Four of the weeks are completed online. One week is completed on site/campus.

We come together on the Sunday night of the clinical week and discuss placements and general expectations for Reading Clinic.

We work with clients each morning.

We have seminars each afternoon.

Students meet other professors in the program and ask questions concerning courses that are yet to be taken.

We have had many groups come for the summer clinical since 2003.

Reason for current proposal With the advent of the online Masters in Reading Program, our numbers of candidates have quadrupled. We currently run one on campus clinical and began with one ‘online’ clinical in the local schools. We are bringing eight ‘online’ clinicals to EUP this summer. We are presently working in Cambridge Springs, Pfeiffer Burleigh, Saegertown, Fort LeBoeuf, and General McLane. We presently provide a one week experience which involves working with clients from 9am to 11am daily.

Proposal Clients would be selected, by the district, to participate in the Reading Clinic with EUP. Letters would be sent to the parents of the selected students. They return a signed permission Initially, the number of students needed is 25.

Clients for the Reading Clinic at district The parent would need to commit to making sure that the student is present each morning for the five days of the Clinic. The students would be transported to the district, by their parents or by the district, during the week of the clinical. The Reading Clinic would run for approximately two hours each morning of the designated week.

Clients for the Reading Clinic at EUP The parent would need to commit to making sure that the student is present each morning for the five days of the Clinic. The students would be transported to EUP, by their parents, during the week of the clinical. The Reading Clinic would run for approximately two hours each morning of the designated week.

The clinical experience is a very important part of the Masters in Reading Program. We appreciate your consideration of this proposal to collaborate with us in providing this very valuable portion of our program.

Thank you!
