1 Non-Renewable Resources
By: Bin Chen Lawrence Lee

2 Table of Content What are Non-Renewable Resources
Extraction of these Resources World’s Resource Distribution Consumption of the Resources Impacts on The World

3 What are Non-Renewable Resources?
A natural resource Oil and Natural Gas Only a finite amount of supply Not renewed by a natural system As quickly as they are used

4 Types of Non-Renewable Resources
Oil and Natural Gas Energy sources that formed over hundred million years ago Decomposed plant and animal matters

5 Extraction of Oil Rotary drilling
Drill string is supported by a derrick String is rotated by being coupled to the rotating table on the derrick floor Drill cuttings are lifted continually to the surface by a circulating-fluid system driven by a pump

6 Extraction of Oil Water Injection
Increasing or maintaining pressure within the reservoir Water physically displaces the oil, thus increasing the recovery efficiency High uniformity, it can increase recovery efficiency to as much as 60%

7 Water Injection

8 Extraction of Oil Steam Injection
used in reservoirs where there are a lot of viscous oil source of energy to displace the oil reduces the viscosity, therefore increasing the flow

9 World’s Oil Extraction Distribution

10 World’s Natural Gas Distribution

11 Assessment Exploitation Fossil Fuel and Natural Gases
may not be easily replenished Condition are no long suitable to produce Requires thousands of years to replenish

12 Consumption of Resources
Oil uses Power internal combustion engine Power plants burn coal to make steam that turn turbines and create electricity Make plastic, tar, synthetic fibres, fertilizers, and medicines Export

13 Consumption of Resource
Natural Gas Uses Used both as a fuel and as a raw material in the manufacture of chemicals Burned in furnaces Water heaters Cooking stoves Clothes dryers

14 Consumption of Resources
Natural Gas Used to bake bricks and ceramic tiles and to produce cement Serves as a raw material for creating petrochemicals

15 Consumption: Pros Fossil Fuel & Natural Gas Cheap Easy to Transport
Large Amount is Currently Available Clean (Burning Natural Gas) Easily Refined Produces Large Amounts of Energy

16 Consumption: Cons Oil & Natural Gas Non-Renewable Releases CO2
Causes Greenhouse Effect Extraction sites disturbs habitats Dirty (Burning oil)

17 Impacts to the Atmosphere
Acid Rain Sulphur Dioxide Global Warming Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere Decrease in air quality

18 Impacts to the Lithosphere
Damage soil Soil erosion and soil degradation Destroy large areas of landscape

19 Impacts to the Hydrosphere
Contamination of water Decrease of water quality Rise of sea level through melting of ice

20 Impacts to the Biosphere
The destruction of marine life Destruction of animal habitats Poison animals
