4B Au Yeung King 4B Chan Ka Shing 4B Ching Kwok Shu 4C Ng Shuk Yan Topic : Global Warming

Division of work:  4B Au Yeung King Evidence of global warming Causes of increasing greenhouse gases (including the pictures and the graphs)  4B Chan Ka Shing Consequences  4B Ching Kwok Shu Definition of global warming (including the graphs)  4C Ng Shuk Yan Solutions Difficulties encountered Power point making

Definition of global warming:  Increases in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans  The Earth's average temperature rose about 0.6° Celsius in the 20th century

 Temperature increases of about 3° to 5° C by the year 2100 or soon afterwards. A 3°C or 5° Fahrenheit rise would likely raise sea levels by about 25 meters.

Evidence of global warming:  Global average temperature is increasing  The number of cold nights and days are increasing

 Ocean temperatures are increasing  T he extent of sea ice cover, glaciers and ice caps has been shirking

Mean cumulative specific mass balance of all reported glaciers (black line) and the reference glaciers (red line)

 The global average sea level has gone up

Causes of increasing greenhouse gases:  Burning of fossil fuels including coal, oil and natural gas 75% of human-induced carbon dioxide emission more in factories and power plants increasing use of cars  Deforestation burning→releases CO2 trees↓→ absorbing the extra amount ofCO2↓

Garbage treatment landfils methane (decomposes) incinerators CO2&nitrous (burning)  Agriculture rice growing & cattle rearing Population↑→Agriculture↑=more crops=releasing CO2↑(by burning organic waste &cattle breathing)& methane (by cattle during the digestive process &paddy growing) releases nitrous oxide(nitrogen fertilizers) change of land cover→CO2 is absorbed by trees↓  Garbage treatment

 Industrial activities CFCsHFCsPFCsSF6Nitrous oxides Foams, refrigeran ts &solvents ★★ Aluminum smelting & magnesiu m productio n ★★ Productio n of nylon ★

Consequences:  As ocean temperatures rise melting of continental glaciers ↑→rising sea levels will drown coastal low- elevation areas→the human living environment↓ water evaporates↑=rainfall↑ → floods, landslides and debris flows

 As atmospheric temperature increases the high-latitude spread of tropical diseases↑ evaporation↑+the wrong farming methods→the protection of a good semi-arid areas into semi-arid areas→desertification↑  Extinction of species the temperature near the polar regions↓→ many species↓

Solutions:  International cooperation the signing of the Kyoto Protocol →the emission of greenhouse gases↓ The ‘Bali Roadmap’ →a long-term global goal for emission reductions  Countries Reduce greenhouse gas emissions Engage in large-scale afforestation Develop in a sustainable way

 Individual effort The size of carbon footprint↓→greenhouse gases↓ can reduce the size of carbon footprint in some ways(at home, shopping, transport and travel)

Difficulties encountered:  Difficult to find the time to discuss  Difficult to find the examples to reflect global warming  Difficult to express in English
