Technology in the Classroom: The Impact of Teacher’s Technology Use and Constructivism Dr. Kerry Rice Jennifer Cullen and Farnoush Davis Channing Grant

Introduction This paper focuses on the use of technology in the classroom -AND- How the constructivist theory of teaching is the best fit when integrating technology in the classroom.

Reasons for Teacher’s Technology Use in the Classroom Learner is more interested about the subject It decreases learning time It provides opportunities to learn in non- traditional ways.

Influences on Teacher Technology Use in the Classroom A major factor that impacts a teacher’s technology use is whether that teacher received technology training in their undergraduate coursework. In a study conducted by Hernandez-Ramos: – Fifty-five percent of teachers surveyed strongly agreed with the statement, "A teacher's proficiency with computers will affect his/her willingness to integrate technology into the curriculum" – This also revealed that if teachers were regularly using technology at home they would feel at ease when using it in the classroom. “Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.” Dr. Robert Anthony

Teacher’s Use of Learning Theories Makes Technology Tools More Effective The question the authors asked: – “Does technology by itself make the classroom effective, or do you have to have a model or instructional theory to integrate technology in an effective way?” According Muniandy, Mohammad & Fong’s research: “technology use should be embedded within a learning theory to support the methodology” – Their research findings suggest that teachers cannot rely on technology tools or learning theories independently. The two must come together to make a productive classroom.

The Benefits of Constructivism Education has three basic purposes: -remembering knowledge -understanding knowledge -applying knowledge and skills in actual settings According to the paper, many observations and studies have shown that the constructivist theory is the most popular when integrating technology. The student-centered environment of constructivism empowers the teaching- learning process in order to improve the level of learning.

Constructivism as a Framework for Educational Technology Research in the paper states that there is a connection between teachers with constructivist instruction styles and their technology use in the classrooms. – This relationship between technology use and constructivist teaching suggests that these teachers encourage technology as a learning tool in their classrooms.

Constructivism as a Framework for Educational Technology (cont.) Hernandez-Ramos (2005) study targeted teachers in the Silicon Valley in California to find out what influenced their technology use in the classroom. 3 Factors: – If teachers had been exposed to technology in their teacher training programs, technology was used more frequently by the teacher and students than in other classrooms – Technology was used more frequently by the teacher and students in classrooms where teachers had an understanding of software applications – If teachers held constructivist beliefs, technology was used more frequently by the teacher and students than in other classrooms.

Constructivism as a Framework for Educational Technology (cont.) Constructivist teachers pattern their instruction after the old Chinese saying: "Tell me and I will forget; show me, and I may remember; involve me and I will understand" This focuses on student engagement within the learning process.

Review Even though the paper focused mainly on using a constructivist model for integrating technology, the authors also stated: – “being an advocate of constructivism isn’t a requirement for the use of technology” I felt that the authors stated great reasons why technology should be used, even if the focus was mainly on constructivism. “Technology becomes more than just another way to present information; it becomes the system in which information is presented.”
