1 Notes – Measurement

2 International System of Units
International System of Units - a system of measurement based on multiples of ten abbreviated S.I. the metric system the world's most widely used system of units

3 Length length - the distance between two points
meter - the unit of measure for length the amount of space between two things measured with a ruler or meterstick

4 Length

5 Length How long is the pencil?

6 Length 53 cm

7 Length How long is the eraser?

8 Length 5.8 cm

9 Liquid Volume volume - the amount of space a liquid takes up
liter - the unit of measure for liquid volume meniscus - the convex or concave upper surface of a column of liquid

10 Liquid Volume measured with a graduated cylinder
liquid forms a curvature called a meniscus (because of surface tension) always be at eye-level and read from the BOTTOM of the curve

11 Liquid Volume Always pay attention to which marks are labeled and unlabeled. Determine what the unlabeled marks represent. Notice how this graduated cylinder has EVEN numbers marked. You can infer that each unlabeled line is 0.2 mL.

12 Liquid Volume 6.6 mL You can infer that each unlabeled line is 0.2 mL.
NOT 7.2 mL

13 Solid Volume measured with a ruler area = length x width
volume = length x width x height the unit is always CUBED (centimeters)

14 Solid Volume 672 cm3 measured with a ruler area = length x width
volume = length x width x height the unit is always CUBED (centimeters) 7 x 8 x 12 = 672 cm3

15 Mass mass - the amount of matter in an object
gram - the unit of measure for mass measured with a triple beam balance

16 Mass each “beam” gives a reading and you have to add all 3 of them together

17 Mass g 60 g g 167.5 g

18 Mass an electronic balance may also be used

19 Mass to find the mass of a substance in a container:
Place the EMPTY container on the balance. Press the “tare” or “zero” button to get the mass to zero. Fill the container with what you want to weigh, and record the mass.

20 Temperature temperature - the measure of the average energy of the motion of particles in a substance Celsius scale - the unit of measure for temperature where water freezes at 0º and boils at 100º.

21 Temperature measured with a thermometer
Pay attention to which lines are labeled and which are not Pay attention to if your reading is above zero or below zero. Put a minus sign if it is below zero. Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100 °C.

22 Temperature SCALE each line is __ degree SCALE each line is __ degree

23 Temperature SCALE each line is 1 degree SCALE each line is 1 degree

24 Distance in Space astronomical unit - the average distance from Earth to the sun (about 150 million km) Use astronomcal units (AU) to measure distances within our solar system (planet to planet)

25 Distance in Space light-year - the distance light travels in one year (about 10 trillion km) Use light-years to measure distances outside our solar system (galaxy to galaxy, star to star)
