LAT Design Integration1 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 LAT Planning Meeting December 10, 2003 Design Integration LAT Planning Meeting December 10, 2003 Design Integration Martin Nordbynordby@slac.stanford.edu

LAT Design Integration2 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Tracker Leads: Mike Foss—LAT, Tom Borden—TKR Recent work –Completed TKR flex cable design study and held review (27 Oct 2003) Open issues for Tracker –Flexure interface to Grid Developed cup-and-cone interface for corner flexures to eliminate play in system and resulting bad things happening during vibe This also allows for the establishment of a unique datum reference system between the TKR and Grid, thereby greatly improving the interface definition Mid-side flexures will be mounted to the Grid using “liquid-shim” technology developed for the CAL Shear Plates Further work to closure –Complete detail design concept (Foss / ECD: Thu 11 Dec 2003) –Update IDD draft with this concept (Foss / ECD: Tue 16 Dec 2003) –Update TKR flexure models and drawings (Borden / ECD: Tue 16 Dec 2003) –Develop retrofit plan for EM vibe test (Borden / ECD: ) –Flex Cable routing Final IDD stay-clear dimensions of cable needs checking against Grid chaseway details (Campell / ECD: Thu 11 Dec 2003) –Stay-clear at top of TKR module TKR designed their flex cables such that they extend out of their stay-clear volume slightly Need to evaluate extent of violation and if we can accommodate this (Foss / ECD: 14 Jan 2004) –Provisions for fly-away instrumentation mounting and surveying tool Need to develop details for mounting of instrumentation and surveying tool TKR detailed drawings need independent check to confirm form, fit, function, and interfaces (Foss / ECD: 14 Jan 2004)

LAT Design Integration3 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Tracker (cont.) Interface Definition Drawing (LAT-DS-00851-02) –Third draft of this revision is out to TKR, Elec, Mech for review –Drawing in check by Design Integration –Further work Mark-ups to Design Int by COB Thu 11 Dec 2003 Revised IDD draft out for final check (ECD: COB Tue 16 Dec 2003) IDD signed by COB Thu 18 Dec 2003 Outline Drawing (LAT-DS-001627) Waiting completion of flexure and top design changes (Foss / ECD: 28 Jan 2004)

LAT Design Integration4 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Calorimeter Leads: Wing Ng—LAT, Paul Dizon—CAL Recent work –Completed checking of CAL baseplate fabrication drawings and OK’d for fab (8 Dec 2003) Open issues for CAL –Where and when fly-away instrumentation is mounted to back of CAL This is a post-delivery issue that has no impact on CAL, but affects cable integration and routing during LAT assembly ECD can’t be set until final instrumentation list is developed  this is in-work by analysis group, and should be able to spec this by late Jan 2004 –Final check of Grid Box drawings needed to confirm fit of Shear Plates This has no impact on CAL, but may force holes in Shear Plates to be opened up (Nordby / ECD: Tue 16 Dec 2003) Interface Definition Drawing (LAT-DS-00233-07) –Draft of revision 7 is complete and checked against CAL baseplate and Grid fab drawings –This is intended to reflect changes already made to CAL design, so there should not be any surprises. –Second draft is underway (Ng / ECD: Fri 12 Dec 2003) –Revised IDD draft out for check on Friday –IDD signed by COB Thu 18 Dec 2003  this will be tight, and needs CAL, Mech, and Elec support to make happen Outline Drawing (LAT-DS-001625) –STEP file delivered by CAL, but missing cable model –Model being incorporated into Solid Edge and checked –Next step: generate outline drawing (Ng / ECD: 28 Jan 2004)

LAT Design Integration5 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 ACD Leads: Mike Foss—LAT, Mike Amato—ACD Recent work –Worked on ACD-Bulkhead cable re-routing effort Open issues for ACD: –Details of mounting features in BEA Need to start working details of match-drilling and mounting, to avoid surprises due to internal design constraints Once outline model comes through, we will start meetings with ACD to work process details –MLI blanket interfaces Blanketing concepts for LAT have been discussed with Spectrum and LM, but these need to be fleshed out to finalize ACD blanket geometry, termination, support, and grounding We will start work on this once we have an ACD assembly model –Instrumentation LAT needs to finalize instrumentation needed to be mounted on ACD (post-delivery) Location and cable routing need to be worked with ACD  no ECD on this Interface Definition Drawing (LAT-DS-00309-03) –Released –No known liens on interfaces, but additional detail may need to be added after match- drilling processes are worked out Outline Drawing (LAT-DS-01626) –Working actively with ACD group to get a translated model, but have not succeeded yet –Next step: waiting on ACD to deliver another model, since last one was not clean and was missing much –Once model is received, we will check it and start work on outline drawing (Tim O’Heron)

LAT Design Integration6 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Radiators Leads: Tim O'Heron—LAT, Marc Campell—Radiators Recent work –Completed integration study Just completed integration study to figure out how to integrate Radiators up into holes in Grid wing without violating SC hardware stay-clears Gained better understanding of SC hardware stayclears through Radiator, and laid out assembly motion study We have developed a concept that works and confirmed that Radiators can be safely integrated with current cut-outs –Checked Radiator and Grid Box tolerances Confirmed that the current design and tolerances keep us within our LAT-DS-00040-11 stay-clear Need to custom-shim the Radiators into place {NBD}  add this to LAT integration plans Open issues for Radiators –VCHP helium leak rate Potential contamination problem with helium leak from pinch-off right next to ACD BEA Got spec’d leak rate info from LM (8 Dec 2003) Need to get BEA and BFA drawings from ACD group (could also use ACD model) Need to run some diffusion analysis –Protection: IDD needs to include required provisions for protecting fragile pinch-offs. –Need to codify SC stay-clears through Radiators, so we can count on them for Radiator integration –MLI blanketing: once LAT blanketing scheme is worked out, this needs to be flowed down to Radiators –Cable routing: routing of cables and placement of instrumentation needs to be checked by LAT, to confirm that everything stays within its stay-clear and is routed correctly.

LAT Design Integration7 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Radiators (cont.) Interface Definition Drawing (LAT-DS-01221-01) –Released –Needs updating to fix error in heat pipe holes layout, mounting pin size, and to add cable routing information (O'Heron / ECD: 14 Jan 2003) Outline Drawings (LAT-DS-01628 and -01629) –Waiting on final Radiator solid model delivery from LM (post MRR) –Currently using older model

LAT Design Integration8 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 X-LAT Plate Leads: Wing Ng—LAT, Marc Campell—X-LAT Recent work –Completed X-LAT Peer Review (5 Nov 2003) Open issues for X-LAT: –EMI sealing Current design produces local heat pipe interferences  working details of how to close out holes –Ground cooling Water cooling is spec’d but I&T prefers gas cooling  need to follow up on this and work details of gas cooling channels and manifolding to see if this is feasible –Heat pipe shimming process XLHP-DSHP-VCHP assembly and shimming process and tolerances need to be worked out, then X-LAT tolerances can be checked Design Integration will develop the basic process details along with checking of the X-LAT SCD, then let Mech qualify the process –Instrumentation: need to spec how thermal sensors are routed on X-LAT (NBD) –MLI blanketing: need to develop blanket design for X-LAT blanket –Heat pipe protection: need to spec protection for pinch-offs. Source Control Drawing (LAT-DS-01247-02) –Third draft of X-LAT Source Control Drawing is in check with X-LAT engineer at SLAC (ECD: 12 Dec 2003) –Final draft out for review to LM, Mech, and Elec by Thu 18 Dec 2003 Outline Drawing –Plan to use SCD model until LM completes their detailed design –Once they go to MRR, we will incorporate their model and generate outline drawing

LAT Design Integration9 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Grid Box Base Assembly Leads: Mike Foss—LAT, Bill Olsen—Mech Open issues for Grid Box –Checking: Grid drawing checking has just started (Nordby / ECD: 16 Dec 2003) –Heater Control Box This appear to be an orphan: who owns this and is responsible for cost, schedule, qualification, test planning and STE, and defining functional tests? There are known interferences between this and the handling bracket, and suspected cable routing problems  can’t work this until we figure out who the responsible subsystem is –Heat Pipe Patch Panel This needs to come off for integration, to allow for adequate clearance for TEM connectors This needs to be closed out with Mech –Top Flange Heat Pipe process qual: need to confirm that top flange cut-outs are adequate for heat pipe assembly process. This has not been qual'd yet. –Radiator Mount Bracket design: trading handling load cases vs M-GSE handling requirements to figure out if flight design needs beefing up or lifting requirements levied on I&T for +Z-horizontal lifts {NBD, but need to catch this} –Ground cooling: chill bar design has been roughly spec'd, but this needs to be finalized to confirm that we have correct features in Grid for this –Heaters and thermostats Location and volume for these need spec’ing (Mech) Routing these cables will likely generate access and stay-clear problems at the corners –Heat Pipe ammonia leak rate for TFHP and DSHP Is this a potential contamination problem with ammonia and silicon in TKR (issue unearthed a few weeks back)? IDD: none

LAT Design Integration10 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Electronics Open issues for Electronics: –TEM and TPS drawings need checking by Design Integration  ball is in our court with no ECD –X-LAT mounting holes and tolerances: need to confirm that the planned locations and tolerances for interfaces in the E-Boxes have actually been implemented –Cable trays: tray design is being modified to reflect changes in LAT assembly sequence, but these need checking before release. –Internal cable routing Final lengths being worked by Elec, but this depends on integration sequence Finalizing LAT Integration Sequence to firm up these plans. This needs LAT review. –External cable routing External ACD, Mech, and SC cable routing are partially defined (Elec is working this) Need to fold in other constraints, such as LAT stay-clear, lines-of-sight, integration needs, etc. Bulkhead panels: size and shape of panels, and configuration of connectors on them needs checking to confirm that they don't interfere with other external features on the LAT ACD-Bulkhead cable routing and mounting: details of routing and strain-relief are still in-work (Elec)

LAT Design Integration11 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 LAT Assembly Planning: LAT Integration Sequence (LAT-MD-00676-02) –Document is being revised now, and will be ready for wide-spread distribution by 19 Dec 2003 –Anticipate releasing it in early January MGSE Requirements document –This attempts to define all req's for MGSE that flow out of LAT integration and testing sequences –Still need to work on this, and get the loop closed with I&T group –Once the LAT Integration Sequence is out we will change focus to finalizing requirements and design implementation LAT Environmental Test Sequence (LAT-MD-02717-01) –Developing this as the next step in flushing out all LAT assembly details and GSE requirements –First draft is not ready for prime time, but will be worked once integration sequence is released Observatory integration sequence –This is the final document in the trilogy –Not started

LAT Design Integration12 GLAST LAT ProjectDecember 2003 Summary of Milestones for the Next 3 Months TKR –Release TKR IDD: 18 Dec 2003 –Close stay-clear issues at top of TKR and release revised IDD: 14 Jan 2004 CAL –Release revision of CAL IDD: 18 Dec 2003 –Complete first draft of CAL Outline drawing: 28 Jan 2004 Radiators –Release revised Radiator IDD: 14 Jan 2004 X-LAT Plate –Release X-LAT SCD: 14 Jan 2004 LAT Assembly –Distribute LAT Integration Sequence for review: 19 Dec 2003
