GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 3 Interdependencies with other subsystems, instrument office, and/or project office. CSE – Analysis support for design release S/C - need tool to drill S/C I/F on Grid & flexures for test? TRK – need matched tooling to drill TRK-Grid I/F ACD – need BEA to match drill BEA LM – X-LAT plates needed for GBA testing prior to delivery to I&T –Radiators needed for LAT environmental tests PO – LM ITAR hardware in B33 ELEC – TCS design, prototype fab & EGSE design & fab for Radiator Thermal balance test ELEC needs –Release of E-box enclosure designs –X-LAT plate thermal performance I&T - Schedule space in B33 for MECH assy & test I&T needs - Grid to start integration –X-LAT design drives accessibility to E-boxes –EMI skirt & Grid provisions for ground cooling –Jeff Wang responsible for thermal analysis of ground cooling

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 4 Flight hardware procurements – schedule for existing and plans for remaining Long-Lead Procurements –Aluminum Billets due 8/26 (what is the flaw size requirement) –Heat pipe extrusions (LM - placed) –Solid State thermostats have been replaced with standard bimetallic thermostats Major Upcoming Procurements Near-Term (< 4 months) –Lockheed Martin Phase 2 – placed –Grid Assembly - 7/30 place contract (quotes due 7/18) –Flight Hardware for Thermal Control System - started Minor Upcoming Procurements –GSE – 6 designs est Nov 03 –Grid Assembly Fixtures, Test Equipment est Dec 03 –Thermal-cycle Test Fixtures est Jan 04

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 5 Flight Hardware Manufacturing Plans 3 Assy plansDrafts 3 Assy ProceduresNot Started ~12 Process Specs (some used by LAT)Not Started 2 Test PlansNot Started 2 Test ProceduresNot Started Does not include LM or Grid Vendor plans & procedures

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 6 Engineering Model Testing Closure CAL-Grid Joint Testing –No further tests planned for Shear plates –CAL bolt preload vs. torque statistical sampling X-LAT thermal joint testing –Coupon level thermal tests of candidates –Mock up E-box stack-up with heaters on sidewalls to simulate electronics heat source and flight like installation procedures to identify potential process problems (who’s responsible? ELEC?) –Perform Random Vibe and Thermal Vacuum tests if required 1x4 Grid –Static load test (FEM verification) –CAL Shear plate installation/removal validation –CAL installation demo (TRK cable-EMI skirt clearances) –Purge gas system demo? (what is reqmt for flow rate?)

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 7 Engineering Model Testing Closure (cont) Grid top flange heat pipe bonding process qualification –Validate tooling –Demo process control Demonstrate Radiator installation process –6 wet RTV joints in vertical orientation & restricted access –Demo with Radiator +Z and +X up –Complete within pot life limits (bonded & torqued) –Verify bond line integrity (uniform thickness & % voids) Demonstrate Radiator removal process –Separate 6 joints with restricted access –No damage or distortions of heat pipes –Verify material can be cleaned up & surface prepared again for another bond

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 8 Open Flight Design Issues 1.Finalize CAL-Grid interface design 2.Finalize X-LAT to E-box design 3.Close the loop on Grid-ELEC interface (grounding & EMI) 4.Delete Radiator level EMI test requirement? (perform EM test w/ D. Nelson) 5.Mechanically install Radiators for LAT EMI test? (EMI test plan out for review) 6.Grid-TRK interface define Grid datums & TRK tooling interface 7.Define GBA Static Load test requirements & plans 8.S/C Flexures for GBA static load test? 9.GBA Thermal cycle vs Thermal Vacuum test approval 10.RFA on adding a U heat pipe to X-LAT plate in case of XLHP failure 11.Other RFA’s closure 12.Examine removing X-LAT plates from GBA static load and thermal cycle tests to beak schedule dependency

GLAST LAT ProjectLAT Mgr’s meeting July 17-18, 2003 9 Concerns & Risks 1.Will we be ready to cut Grid chips on Sep 12? a.Detailed stress analyses complete b.Design mods incorporated c.Successful MRR 2.Manpower (Engr & Techs) availability 3.Details of how, where & who for Grid Box Assembly work (Larry Wai) 4.Finalizing CAL & X-LAT designs a.EM testing & flight grid fab in parallel 5.Cost &availability of EGSE for Radiator Thermal Balance Test 6.Adequate support for LM efforts
