GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 1 Tracker EM Mechanical Mock-up T Borden I&T Tracker Mock-up

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 2 Outline  Tracker Tower Mock-Up  Test Fixtures  Hardware Modifications  Schedule  Concerns  Conclusions  Mini Tower

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 3 Tracker Tower Mock-Up  Why have two Tracker mock-ups?  One-mock up needed for I&T at a minimum  Second mock-up (Tracker EM) can be used for Vibration test and I&T  Identify multi Tower installation issues (pointing, alignment, clearance)  Allows first mock-up to be available in early April for I&T  EM Tracker available mid April, with help from INFN, for Vibration test then ship to SLAC for I&T  Two Tracker Tower mock-up plan:  EM Tower – Remove bottom tray from EM Tower in Italy and modify at SLAC – Reassemble EM Tower in Italy and vibration test at Alenia – Ship EM Tower to SLAC  “New” Tracker mechanical model from prototype parts – Second EM Bottom Tray modified at SLAC – COI side walls at SLAC – Prototype trays at SLAC and INFN (need these shipped back to SLAC) – All other small parts available at SLAC

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 4 Test Fixtures  Drawings of Grid and Tracker – required to start  1 X 1 Grid fixture – For integration or Mini Tower?  Updated interface for integration or use 1X4?  Use for mini Tower  1 X 4 Grid – from Mechanical in flight configuration  For integration testing?  For Flight Tower testing?  Alignment fixtures  Purpose design?  Both mock-ups can be used to align Towers  All interface parts and fasteners – make set for I&T  Lifting fixture – from Tracker or I&T?

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 5 Hardware Modifications  Bottom Tray modification Tooling  1 X 1 Top ring  Mini Tower Support  Track 1 X 4 completion for on time delivery

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 6 Schedule  Start February 2 nd  See attached schedule  Inputs needed  Drawings from Tracker and Mechanical subsystems  Parts from Tracker subsystem – Bottom Tray and inspection criteria for repair – Mid span flexures and bonding process – Sidewalls – Fasteners – Cables – Who supplies lifting fixture?  Parts from Mechanical subsystem – 1 X 4 Grid  Agreement on complete Tower test plan and fixtures

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 7 Concerns  Can Resources be made available in a timely manner, both workforce and funding  No full time designer available until February 16th  Can Tracker and Mechanical subsystems provide needed materials and support

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 8 Conclusions  Build up two Tracker mock-ups  I&T mock-up for integration  EM Tracker for vibration test and I&T needs

GLAST I&T January 29 2004 T Borden 9 Mini Tower  Design Sidewalls and top tray simulator ring  Flight Lifting fixture can be used  Design and fabricate test stand parts as needed (need test stand requirements)  Assemble Mini Tower with 5 th tray
