July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 3 Tracker Mock-up Engineering Development CMM Program established from Tower Mock-up model Developed in Bay area and at INFN Experience gained from Mock-up Tower to Grid simulator installation Alignment of Eccentric cones Testing of the CMM program Differences between Mock-up model and E.M. (Flight like) model Corner Flexures are non flight like (older rev.) Does not contain corner brackets or flight like reflector ball nests

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 4 Tower Alignment Summary Measurements at INFN –Used their CMM which runs PC-DMIS –Created measurement scripts for automated measurements –Derived CS which puts tower in optimized position, i.e. Z-axis vertical wrt gravity, X, Y symmetrical to actual shape –Determined coordinates of flexure conicals in tower CS –Comparing actuals vs design yields dial-in settings for cones –Applied settings, mounted tower to base –Cross-checks good to 500 µm (TBs too small and loose) Planned measurements at SLAC –Verify procedure by independently creating equivalent measurement routine on our Leitz PMM using Quindos –Repeat measurement / alignment cycle at least three times

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 5 I&T Flow For Tracker Installation Receive TKR Tower Inspect, Metrology & El Test Final Test Remove CAL, TEM, TEM-PS, & TKR Tower from Single Bay Install CAL, TEM, & TEM-PS Install TKR into alignment fixture Measure TKR and Align Cones Test Prepar e Grid Bay Install TKR Tower into Grid Bay Install TKR Tower into Single Bay Install CAL, TEM, & TEM-PS

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 6 Grid Interface Hardware list Installation Shims: LAT-DS-03506 Outer Eccentric Cone: LAT-DS-02788 Inner Eccentric Cone: LAT-DS-02787 Hex Bushing: LAT-DS-02789 Hex Nut: LAT-DS-03925 Shoulder Stud: LAT-DS-02791 Corner Flexure Grid

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 7Notation +Y, +x +Y, -x-X, +y -Y, -x -Y, +x+X,-y +X, +y -X,+Y +X,+Y (reference location) -X,-y -X,-Y (reference location) +X, -Y (reference location) +X +Z +Y Grid Simulator (Tower base plate) +X, +y designates the stud on the + y side of the flexure which is on located on the +X side wall. For all side flexures, the side flexure identifier is capitalized, while the side flexure conical (stud) is in lower case.

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 8 Installation Procedure (Static test) - INFN Refer to section 2.1 of LAT-DS-0425-01 Installed Grid simulator with no Aligning – Performed on Tower Mock-up – requires no Aligning tools – Adjusting tools required Preset three inner and outer cones to the concentric position For three reference locations Used to locate the position of Tower Align slots on both cones Remaining cones are to be “Dithered” Process in which cones seat to their required position

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 9 Presetting Procedure Refer to section 6.1 of LAT-DS-04245 Section 6.1.9: determine α by using Matlab program “angtool” Setting α, “inner to outer cone angle”

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 10 Installation Procedure (Aligning to CMM measurement) - INFN Refer to LAT-MD-03566 and LAT-PS-04245 Tower C.S +Z Struc C.S +Z Tower C.S +Z Define a coordinate system based on the location of Top and Bottom Tray Hardware. Then move it so it is centered on the shape and size of the Sidewalls Calculate Flexure Point offsets from nominal and check against available travel Set Eccentric Cone rotation, then mount Grid Simulator and fit with shims. Determine β for each reference location LAT-PS-04245: Section 2.3

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 11 Installation Adjusting Procedures Dithering Process in which cones seat to their required position Tool LAT-DS-04337 Shimming Procedure Refer to LAT-PS-04245 section 9 Measurement of gap Selection of shim stack Cone removal procedure Refer to LAT-PS-04245 section 8 Assembly of the cone Extractor Removal of the Inner cone from the Corner Flexure Removal of the Outer cone from the Corner Flexure Separation of Inner cone from Outer cone

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 12 Alignment Tools

July 28 2004GLAST Project Installation Review LATLAT 13 Additional Topics Optical Survey Tools Near-Term Plans Final CMM of Mock-up at SLAC (8/5-6 tbd) I&T Training Grid I/F Hardware for I&T Future Topics (Next Meeting) Flex Circuit Cable Installation Cable Bending Cable Bonding Connector Saver Plan
