Why is it important? Water

Earth is 75% water People need to drink water to stay healthy Used to clean things – dishes and our bodies Controls body and planet temperature Rids of body wastes Carries oxygen and other nutrients to our cells Protects our organs Assists in plant growth Exists in three states – solid, liquid and gas and all are beneficial to humans We use it to cook We use it for recreation More plants and animals live in water than on land To transport things – ships and cargo It’s the start of The Water Cycle, a major driving force on our planet

Describes how water moves between the earth’s surface and the atmosphere. The Water Cycle And how does it do that? It rains!

How does it rain? 1. The sun heats the ocean. 2. Water evaporates forming water vapor in the air. 3. The vapors cool and condense to become raindrops, which form clouds. 4. These raindrops fall to the ground. 5. The rain flows back into the waters. 6. The water sinks into the soil to collect underground. The cycle starts all over again. It’s The Water Cycle!

Evaporation The process of becoming a vapor. High Energy: Evaporating Medium Energy: Pulled back into water Lower Energy: Remain as liquid 1.The sun heats the ocean 2.Water evaporates from warm air and low pressure areas to form water vapor in the air.

Condensation to transform from a gaseous state into a liquid state 3. The vapors cool in cold air and condense to become raindrops, which form clouds.

Precipitation What might cause the rain to fall? A.The ground pulls them down. B.The raindrops become too heavy for the atmosphere. C.The clouds push the drops out. D.The air does not want the drops anymore 4. These raindrops fall to the ground. the falling of any form of water (rain, snow, hail, sleet or mist) to the ground

Runoff any precipitation on an area that is not absorbed, but instead flows away from that area 5. The rain flows back into the waters and down areas of land.

Percolation the movement of water through soil Infiltration Percolation Infiltration = percolation 6. The water sinks into the soil to collect underground.

LET’S SEE THIS CYCLE IN ACTION! Click Here for Water Cycle Animation
