2 goals for today to see if everyone enrolled in the course is here to create a waiting list for those not yet enrolled –to explain the principles used to order the waiting list to confirm enrollment in the sections to think about the term “medium” to do sitting and moving introductions to consider the constellation public/private/facebook to provide everyone with the first reading assignment to go over the syllabus

[yes or no] 8. do you have a facebook or myspace profile? [facebook or myspace or no] 9. answer this question in 2 or 3 sentences: what does “digital media” mean to you?

4 waiting list principles of ordering –transfers have preference over non-transfers –majors have preference over non-majors –juniors have preference over sophomores –sophomores have preference over frosh –frosh have preference over seniors –those who came the first day of class have preference over those who did not –within categories, people have been randomly assigned a position

6 sections sections are mandatory all sections meet in porter college, room d240 (computer lab) sections will be held starting tomorrow, friday

7 have a section, but want to change? please fill out a second piece of paper: 1.name 2.current section assignment 3.rank ordering of desired section assignments 4.list of sections you cannot meet with 5.email address note the risk of changing section assignments: you will be put on a waiting list to be assigned to another section, but you will be giving up your guaranteed section assignment.

8 section re-assignments & permission codes on tuesday we will have a ranked waiting list for those of you not yet enrolled, but hoping to attend; those at the top of the waiting list will be emailed a section assignment section (re)assignments will be sent to you via email from one the t.a.s (elizabeth travelslight, alex konrad, nikolaos hanselmann) sections will meet starting tomorrow, friday if you have been assigned a section, permission codes will be handed out at the section meeting

9 course texts Noah Wardrip-Fruin and Nick Montfort (editors) The New Media Reader (MIT Press, 2003) Rachel Greene, Internet Art (Thames and Hudson, 2004) The required texts can be purchased at The Literary Guillotine bookstore at 204 Locust Street, Santa Cruz. They will also be on reserve at McHenry Library.

10 reading assignment for next week required The entire text of the book Internet Art by Rachel Greene. There will be a short, easy, open-book quiz on Thursday covering the organization and contents of the book. Bring your copy to class next Thursday (i.e., one week from today).
