1 8.6A Unbalanced Forces

2 Net Force Key Terms Force Balanced Force Unbalanced Force Net Force
At rest Direction Motion Friction

3 Net Force Force Force: a push or pull that can change the motion of an object There are always forces acting on objects, whether the object is moving or not

4 Net Force Net Force Net force: The total amount of force on an object
Net forces cause acceleration The direction of the force will always be the same direction of acceleration

5 Net Force Balanced vs. Unbalance d Forces
Balanced forces: If the net force is zero, the forces are balanced and the object stays still (at rest) or a constant speed

6 Net Force Balanced vs. Unbalanced Forces
Unbalanced forces: If the net force is not zero, the objects motion will change Motion: change in objects direction, distance or location

7 What can cause an object to slow down?
Net Force What can cause an object to slow down?

8 What can cause an object to slow down?
Net Force What can cause an object to slow down? Friction

9 Net Force Friction A force between two surfaces rubbing against each other; friction works against motion

10 Net Force Video During the video, please fill out the following information at the end Balanced: Unbalanced: Just so you know… In the video, we can change the word velocity with acceleration!

11 Finding Net Force

12 Finding Net Force Arrows in the same direction Add the arrows
Unbalanced force: moving

13 Finding Net Force Arrows in opposite directions that are the equal force Subtract the arrows (it will always be zero) Balanced Force: Not moving

14 Finding Net Force Arrows in different directions with different forces
Subtract the arrows Unbalanced Force: Moving

15 What is the net force? 15 N 10 N Net Force: 5 N

16 What team is going to fall in the ditch?
Net Force: 5 N
