2. Unit 12 – Clock Numbers Clock Numbers To tell the time from 1 to 12 o’clock, the first sign “time” (index finger taps the wrist of the non-dominant hand), then sign the number indicating the hour. For 1-9 o’clock, the number is signed with a slight waving movement in the fingerspelling area of the signing space. The numbers for 10, 11 and 12 are signed without the waving movement. For 1-9 o’clock, the sign combination “time” + number is often contracted so that the number indicating the hour begins at the wrist of the non-dominant hand, and then moves to the fingerspelling area.

3. Unit 12 – Clock Numbers Clock Numbers (continued) Hour and Minute Information. For combinations of hour and minute information, sign the number for the hour, then slightly to the right of that, sign the number for minutes. (Left-handed signers sign minutes slightly to the left.) There is no waving movement, and the sign for “time” does not usually precede the numbers. For the first nine minutes (:01 to :09), sign ZERO then the number, i.e., 7:05 = SEVEN, ZERO FIVE. Numbers 1-9 are signed with the palm facing away from the body for both hour and minute information; the rest of the numbers are signed just like the cardinal (or counting) numbers.
