What do you think Urbanization means?

If the world is becoming more urbanized, what do you think this means for rural areas?

Some quick facts about urbanization

3 billion people—half the world's population—live in cities.

Where do the other half live?

In 1800, only 2% of people lived in cities and towns.

Why were there so few people living in cities in 1800? Only 2%! What did they do for work?

Cities are growing for 2 reasons. One reason is the natural increase. How do we calculate this? What is the second reason?

Two-thirds of all people will live in cities by 2050.

What kind of consequences will this have on cities?

Almost 180,000 people move into cities each day.

Where are these people coming from? What types of countries do you think this is happening in? Name 3 countries where you think this may be happening.

Over the next 15 to 20 years, many cities in Africa and Asia will double in size.

Do you think any of the negative effects of population growth are similar to the ones related to urbanization? Which ones?

Look at the next graphs. Describe what they show and how they are different Pay attention to the differences in the increases.

What about Shanghai? Why do you think Shanghai is growing?

Is Shanghai the land of opportunity for many people? When we talk about people moving/migrating to cities, we often talk about push/pull factors. What do these mean?

Describe the push and pull factors you think that your parents felt when they moved to Shanghai

Describe the push and pull factors you think rural people in China feel when they move to Shanghai

In what ways are these push/pull factors similar or different?

How could we find out why people move to Shanghai?

We have to ask people!!!! We are going to make a survey to find out why people move to Shanghai!

What kinds of questions do you think you will ask to find out: Why people move to Shanghai If /how people benefit from moving to Shanghai

What issues do you think you will face when making your survey? Look at the following tips for making a survey.

Make your questionnaire short enough (but not too short) What does this mean? How can it be too short/long?

Use simple words Why would you want to do this?

Start with interesting questions What might happen if you don’t do this?

Use a rating scale if it is helpful What do you think a rating scale is? Why might you want to use one?

Try to avoid open ended questions What is an open ended question? What is the problem with open ended questions?

Brainstorm some simple questions that you think will help you to determine: Why people move to Shanghai Is Shanghai living up to people’s hopes?
