1 Applying to the Secondary Education Minor June 8 – June 12 2015 Application period

Test Score Reporting (TAP/SAT/ACT Plus Writing) http://education.illinois.edu/students/prospective- students/ACT Make sure UIUC has your test scores; Create ELIS account with Illinois State Board of Education; Send test scores to ISBE/ELIS account. 3 Admissions Committees Four separate admissions committees review applications in their content area : English, Math, Science or Social Science. Each committee will consist of 1 LAS faculty member (maybe) 1 College of Ed faculty member Secondary Education Coordinator

4 Notification Email letters with admission decisions will be sent to your UIUC email account no later than July 14, 2015. There are three possible outcomes: Full admission – full admission is pending until ELIS account is established and test scores are in ELIS Conditional admission – if you have requirements that you need to complete before entering the program (e.g., tutoring, courses in progress, etc.); Admission denied -- conditional admission is not offered for low or missing ACT Plus Writing scores or major and/or cumulative gpa’s below 2.5

5 Accepting offer If you receive full admission or conditional admission, you will receive an email offering you a place in the Secondary Education Minor. You must accept or decline the offer by Friday July 31st, 2015 following instructions included in the offer letter. If we don’t hear from you or can’t locate you, we will assume you are no longer interested.

6 Admission denied If you receive an email indicating that your application to the program has been denied, there are a three options: 1.Appeal the decision – there will be instructions in your email about how to do so. You must provide new information that supports your appeal. You will be notified about the decision on Tues, July 21, 2015. 2.Apply again during the following year (adding one year to your degree timeline) 3. Earn your Bachelor’s degree and then obtain a Master’s in teaching or pursue another career direction.

9 Certification of Accuracy You will be asked to read a statement that highlights the following and confirm your understanding: o Fingerprinting/Background Check/FBI o Diversity/inclusion philosophy of the program o Requirement that you maintain 2.5 gpa’s

10 Certification of Accuracy (cont’d) o You will be charged a one time clinical fee o EDPR 203 will show up on your Fall schedule. 11 Personal Information o Name o UIN o email o Cell phone number – not required but I highly recommend that you include it so we can contact you if there are problems

12 Supplementary Materials TWO ESSAYS o Answer each essay separately o Provide concrete examples where possible o 2-3 pages for each essay o Typed o Double spaced o Font size no smaller than 10 point; no larger than 12 point

13 Supplementary Materials ESSAY # 1 Why are you interested in teaching your content major to middle school and/or high school students. o Make a point of addressing the two highlighted areas.

14 Supplementary Materials ESSAY #2 Discuss and reflect upon how your experiences (or the lack thereof) have influenced your ideas of cultural/racial/ethnic diversity (language, people with disabilities, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, gender, etc.) o Think about including self-reflection/self- awareness (i.e., your own multiple identities) as well as your reflections about others.

15 Supplementary Materials Professional Activities and Experiences o Please type your responses into this form. o Activities/experiences important in shaping who you are o Activities/experiences you particularly enjoyed o Activities/experiences that have given you skills transferrable to the teaching profession (e.g., leadership skills, creativity, public speaking, awareness of inclusion/social justice)?

16 Supplementary Materials o Hours Verification Forms o Please type in your responses – it is very frustrating for the committee if we get responses that are illegible. o Please be succinct. o Your teacher supervisors may not write a lot because they are very busy – don’t assume this means you are not doing well. o If you cannot reach your teacher or they don’t respond to email, contact the school’s administrative office. They can often sign off on your hours if the teacher has left the school.

17 Supplementary Materials o Uploading Documents – must be in pdf format; there will be a dropdown list of categories matched to the documents you need to upload: o Essay – required (upload Essay #1 here) o Essay – required (upload Essay #2 here) o Grade Replacement Petition [optional; If there is a grade on your transcript that is lower than a C- you may wish to upload a document that confirms you will be petitioning to do a grade replacement. If you haven’t started this process yet, please make note of it in the comments section (described in a later slide)]. o Hours Verification Form (may be multiple) o Other Supporting Documents – this is where you upload your Professional Activities and Experiences Form

21 Application Checklist  ACT, TAP or SAT scores are already at UIUC or have been sent to the UIUC.  ELIS account created – double checked to make sure Social Security Number is accurate.  Sent ACT, TAP or SAT scores to the Illinois State Board of Education (they will show up in your ELIS account).  Typed in my portion of the Hours Verification Forms for all tutoring experiences.  Collected my teacher supervisor’s portion of the Hours Verification Forms.

22 Application Checklist  Wrote two fabulous essays, spell checked them three times, went to the Writers Workshop* for feedback, asked friends and/or family to provide feedback for improvement. * ( http://www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop/ ) http://www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop/  Completed typed Professional Activities/Experiences form and designated the name and email of a reference in my field of study.  Noted any extenuating circumstances in the comments field.  Converted all files to PDF and uploaded to appropriate category.
