5. God - The desire to spread Christianity around the world.
Every ship sailing to the new world had a missionary on board who was bringing Christianity to the natives. The European's mindset was that they needed to civilize the natives using the bible and its teachings.
Connections to Today -
The effort to bring Christianity to the new world has had long lasting effects to today as nearly 90% of Central and South American countries are dominated by those who practice the Christian faith (according to the figures below).

The Silk Road - Lucrative trade over land and sea was controlled by the Italians in Europe. New technology made it possible to go another route to try to get to China and India for exotic goods. European's decided to take their chances and sail west from Europe not knowing what was ahead.
When the America's were discovered the Natives seemingly all were dressed in Gold and stories of rivers flowing with gold were fabled. A new enticing rush traveled through Europe - get to the Americas and you will be rich!

9. Glory - The desire to be world famous.
The rush for the Americas was on as Europeans bargained with Kings and Queens to finance their voyages to the new world. The idea of becoming world famous for being the first to make it, to bring back its riches and be remembered in history gave navigators and sailors an internal motivation to risk it all to make the journey.
