2 Mission Statement & Goals: -The Location, Acoustics, and Photography Demonstration Satellite, (LAPSat) is designed to obtain acoustic samples during, and panoramic pictures of, the DemoSat IV flight while tracking its location via GPS. -150 pictures; form 25 panoramic pictures -Record 22 sound clips from various altitudes -Track flight and mark location of pictures/recordings

3 Design: Schedule & Budgets Schedule: Start Date: May 15 th, 2006 Number of Students: 7 n Mass: Total: 1405g Budget: 1500g Margin: 95g n Monetary: Total: $774 Budget: $750 Margin: $24

4 Design: System Overview n Six Cameras n Sound Chamber n GPS System n Microcontrollers n Power

5 Design: Structure

6 Design: Circuitry and Program Main Control Board Location Sound

7 Results: Flight Data Results found from data collected on the internal EEPROM of the PIC microcontroller

8 Results: Location Over 10,000 Data Points Collected

9 Results: Acoustical (Recorded amplitude)-(Original amplitude)

10 Results: Photography Altitude: ~20,000 ft. Altitude: ~40,000 ft.

11 Results: Photography Altitude: ~70,000 ft. Altitude: ~80,000 ft.

12 Benefits to NASA: -Demonstration of aerial panoramic photography for identifying landing site. -Sound CAN be used as a diagnostic indicator IF there is sufficient atmospheric pressure -Demonstration of tracking location by GPS and loading into 3D map Potential Follow-on Work: -LAPSAT data transmitted could provide valuable flight information to those who need it -Better cameras can be added for increased resolution

13 Lessons Learned: -Understanding of compromise in decision making -Thorough testing is crucial -Power conservation methods -Cameras need to be synchronized -High sampling rate for sound -Deploy something instead of irrelevant sound
