iPad TALL Tuesday 11.29.2011 Modified by Roman Usatin Original content: Peggy Reimers Texas Computer Education Association

Discussion: Reflection and sharing of apps. What app did you find? What case do you have? What are your questions and concerns?

Importance of Mobile Devices 32% of all Americans have gotten online with a mobile device. African Americans are the most active users of the mobile Internet – and their use of it is also growing the fastest. This means the digital divide between African Americans and white Americans diminishes when mobile use is taken into account. A recent survey predicts that by the year 2020, most people across the world will be using a mobile device as their primary means for connecting to the Internet. PEW Report “The Future of the Internet”

Importance of Tablet Devices Forrester Research predicts that tablet sales (like the iPad) in the U.S. will exceed netbook sales by 2012, and desktop sales by 2015. Forrester Research – What does this mean for educators, who may still be grappling with how to successfully integrate stationary PCs and laptops with varying operating systems into their curricula?

Settings Glance through the PDF “General Settings” in the shared “Other iPad Resources” Dropbox folder online. Make sure you are familiar with what all of these do.

Locking the Orientation Double tap the home button. That should pull up a list of recently used application (this is for fast switching between apps). You can swipe left to see even older apps, or swipe right to get a little control panel. On the left is the orientation lock/unlock button, and there's also easy access to brightness and iPod controls.

Essential Apps

www.tcea.orgwww.tcea.org Creating a Web Clip Access, Bookmark, and Use a Website

Safari In Safari, double tap to zoom in. You can also “pinch” (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.

Quicker Websites A little-known timesaver is that if you hold down the.com key, you get access to a menu that offers other options, too.

Even Faster! When typing a URL in Safari, you don't have to type the "www" or the ".com". For example, you can type "my-iphone" in the URL box in order to view "www.my-iphone.com."

Keep Safari’s Address Bar Handy Ever scroll pretty far down a web page, only to find that the address bar has disappeared? No need to scroll back. Instead, double-tap the white bar along the top of the screen to jump right to the top of the page. The address bar will reappear, regardless of where you are on the actual web page.

Bookmarks Bar in Safari Turn on your Safari Bookmarks Bar permanently. In the Settings app, tap Safari, then turn Always Show Bookmarks Bar to ON.

Make a Web Clip A Web Clip is an icon you can add to your Home screen as a shortcut to a website. With one tap, Safari will open to the Web Clip's page. – To make a Web Clip, simply open the page in Safari. – Tap the Plus sign at the top of the screen. – Tap Add to Home Screen and edit the title (if you want). – Tap Add and, presto, a new icon is added to your Home Screen!

Multiple Pages Open in Safari

Open Links in a New Page You can open links in a new Safari window, rather than always opening them in the current one. Just tap and hold on the link and a pop-over menu appears giving you the option to open the link in a new page.

Find Text on a Page You can search for a particular word on an open page in Safari. – Type your word into the Google search box. – You'll see a list of suggestions appear, and near the bottom you'll see "On This Page", showing how many times that word appears on the page. – Tap the Find option to go to the first instance of the word.

Save Images in Safari/Mail Just touch and hold an image in Safari or Mail. An action sheet will be presented to enable you to save the image. The image will get stored in the “Saved Photos” library of the Photos app.

How Many Apps Can I Have? The most screens (pages) your device can display with applications is: – 11 screens (11 x 20 folders x 20 apps in a folder = 4,400 apps) – Up to 6 apps in the Dock. You can load more applications onto the device. But if you want to use them, you will need to search for them in the Search/Spotlight screen.

Hidden Apostrophe Key To type an apostrophe quickly, just tap and hold on the ! key and a hidden apostrophe option will appear; then just slide your finger up to access it.

Quick Quotes You don't have to move the iPad's second keyboard screen to enter a quotation mark either. Simply tap and hold over the ? key and a quotation symbol appears, which you can select by moving your finger upwards.

Instant Period Another great keyboard tip for typing in apps such as Pages, Notes, or Mail is to double tap the space bar at the end of a sentence. This adds a period and a space for you, which can be enormously time-saving.

Access to Accents To access accents easily, simply press and hold the letter that requires an accent and you will see a range of options displayed. Simply drag and select the one you want and the letter complete with accent is inserted.

The Degree Key Insert the degree symbol in your text by switching to the numeric keyboard and holding down the 0 (zero) key.

Restrict Your Spotlight Searches Swipe left on the Home screen to reveal the Spotlight search. By default, it searches everything, including songs in your iPad, podcasts, apps, email, and events. To restrict the areas it searches, since you may not want all these categories included, look in Settings > General > Spotlight Search.

Take a Screen Shot You can take a screenshot on your iPad by pressing Home and then the Sleep/Wake button. The screen will flash and you'll hear a click, indicating that a photo has been taken. Your screen shots are saved automatically in your Photos gallery. Here, you can view or email them as you see fit.

Street View in Maps App To access Street View you need to have dropped a red pin on the map (which happens when you do a search). You then tap the red and white icon of a person to enter Street View.

Organize Your Apps You can organize your apps any way that you like: – Alphabetically – Most used – By categories (news, media, games, education, etc.) To move an app, hold your finger on top of the app until it starts to wiggle. Then just slide it where you want it. To delete an app from your device, hold your finger on the app and then tap the X to delete. (An X only appears on items that you can delete.) To stop the wiggling, press the Home button.

Want Things in Alphabetical Order? To reset your home screen and re-arrange all of your Apps into alphabetic order, go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset home screen layout.

An Easy Way to Organize An easy way to organize the order of the Apps on your device is to select the “Applications” tab within the iPad Screen when connected to iTunes. When selecting the applications to sync (on the left hand side), you can change the arrangement on the right side (for iTunes 9 and above only).

iBooks Browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device. Once you’ve bought a book, it’s displayed on your Bookshelf.

iBooks Activity Download a free book Increase/decrease the font size Change the brightness Take notes Create a bookmark Look up a word Flip through pages Sift through the table of contents

Reading PDF Files in iBooks 1.Connect your iPad to your computer. 2.Drag the PDF to the Books icon in your iTunes Library, and drop it. (Note that you can edit the name and author(s) of the book if you don't like the way the file name is displayed.) 3.Click your iPad in the Devices list, then click the Books tab. (continued on next slide)

PDF Files in iBooks continued 4.Make sure that the book title box is checked and that Sync Books is also checked. 5.Click the Sync button. 6.A new "PDFs" button appears on your iPad iBooks bookshelf, and a tap displays all PDF documents that are in your library.

Adding Books without the iBookstore There are thousands of public domain books in the ePub format on the web. Some of those free books are available in the iBookstore for free, but not all. Here are a few places to get books: – Google books Google books – Project Gutenberg Project Gutenberg You can find more book sources here.here

Email on the iPad Can you: – Create a signature? – File old emails? – Control how many emails are shown at a time? – Change how much of the email is previewed for you? – Change how often email comes to you on the iPad?

Quicker Email Addresses When typing an email address in the To: or CC /BCC field of the Mail program, press and hold the dot (.) key and you’ll get a list of domain shortcuts in a pop-up to auto-complete the email address

Preview More of Your Emails The iPad's Mail app defaults to previewing two lines of each email before you tap on it. Sometimes however it would be handier to be able to see more of an email before loading the whole thing in, especially if you are on a slow connection. To do this open the Settings app, then tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and change the Preview options to add more lines.

Add a Google Calendar Want to add your Google Calendar to the iPad's Calendar app? No problem. – In Settings, open Mail, Contacts, Calendars. – Add an account and tap on Other. – Tap on Add CalDAV Account and enter your Google Account credentials (the Server is www.google.com). – Exit the Settings app and tap on the Calendar app and all your events should appear. – By default, all calendars are displayed, but you can tap on the Calendars button to choose which ones are shown.

File Sharing in iTunes If you're wondering where Pages, Numbers, and other Apps that save files keep their files, look at the Apps tab when you plug in your iPad to your computer. Scroll down and you'll see File Sharing. Check out the apps that utilize fie sharing and the actual documents. When you're ready to sync your files, use the Add.. button to add your files and work with them on the go.
