2 Definitions Non-consensual contact including unwanted touching, sexual assault, coerced nudity, sexually explicit photographing, and sexual contact with the cognitively impaired. Physiological signs-Genital injuries, bruising in genital areas, pelvic areas, positive for STD’s, oral or throat injury, use of force to coerce sexual relations. Who abuses-spouse, younger males, care workers, adult children.

3 Signs and Symptoms Fears and sleep disorders following possible assault. PTSD, and emergence of disturbing behaviors, depression, fatigue, concentration, diminished interest in activities, psychomotor agitation, worthlessness, suicide ideation. Prevalence of the effects of child abuse experiences manifesting in the elderly-6.8-53% in females 2.5-36.9% in males. Entering a facility may trigger unresolved thoughts, feelings and coping mechanisms related to sexual abuse. Lack of privacy, loss of safety boundaries, loss of control-washing, dressing and personal care.

4 Signs and Symptoms Elderly may be re-victimized in facilities or when they live alone after death of spouse/partner. Some of the recorded impacts of sexual abuse on seniors- sexual identity issues, sexual adjustment problems, low self- esteem, avoidance of sexual activity, sexual functioning problems, seeking inappropriate and high risk relationships, lower frequency of sexual pleasure, avoidance of intimacy. Prevention-investigation and being alert to signs and symptoms, look for warning signs of neglect, psychological changes, engage specialists in identifying and examining the possible incidents, reporting, and ensuring action is taken.
