2 Abstract המעבדה למערכות ספרתיות מהירות High speed digital systems laboratory 2 Ultrasonic waves are used commonly in nature, by animals like Bats and Dolphins, for navigation or prey locating. This project imitates these applications and creates a two dimensional picture of the close environment (up to 2 meters) by using a Phase Array and a PC. We create an ultrasonic beam that scans and locates objects or moving parts with an array of transmitters and another array of receivers all controlled by a programmable chip that is connected to a PC with a DAQ card.

3 System description המעבדה למערכות ספרתיות מהירות High speed digital systems laboratory 3 Two PCB’s shaped as a squares, arced (138º,R = 10.8 cm) on one side, placed one on top of the other. On one PCB’s arc installed an array of transmitters( top one), on the Other one’s arc installed an array of receivers. On the Bottom we have a programmable chip that is connected to a PC with a DAQ card. We receive phases from the PC and accordingly create an ultrasonic beam( 40kHz ).If there is a close object,echoes will be created and will be detected by the receivers. Via a flat cable those signals will continue to bottom card and then to the DAQ card inside the PC. Then an Algorithm preformes analyzes to the sampled signals and tries to detect an object. It decides on which angle to focus, sends the phases to the FPGA, a beam is created and the cycle starts again until the object is detected.

Piesoelectric components: 24 Transmitters and 23 Receivers. Amplifiers for both the receivers and transmitters. 8 Multiplexers for creating a 23 to 8 multiplexer. Thermometer – for environment temperature sampling. Software The FPGA was programmed in VHDL. The Driver is written in C++. 4
