Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics K12 Scholar Presentation: Terminal Server

What is Terminal Server? Developed as a remote access solution (home workers, travelers, folks with multiple offices) Comprised of a “farm” of servers (~10-12) Server farm is situated behind our firewalls Users log in to access network resources All processing is handled on the server side; user machine becomes a ‘terminal’

Why We Like Terminal Server Allows for secure remote access to applications and files Secure, centralized storage of files Very efficient support model Saves $$ for projects on software costs Storage space is secure and backed up Lessens the need to carry important data and applications on a personal laptop

Why We Like Terminal Server, Cont’d Servers housed in excellent server room with real-time failover and multiple backups While using TS users can access files on local hard drives (and peripherals) as well as on the network TS works on PCs, Macs & Unix (Macs can run MS Access easily this way!) and our Windows Terminals (we have 17 available) Local machine only needs an internet connection, web browser, and free Citrix client software

Why We Like Terminal Server, Cont’d Again Projects can save $$ on replacing outmoded computers Helps with classroom & student support

Some Limitations of Terminal Server Online system, hence generally not accessible on airplanes Requires some user training re: file mgmt Printing to local printers can be problematic Limited multi-media capacity

Resources Currently Available on Terminal Server Atlas ti Adobe Acrobat 9 Endnote FileMaker v. 4 & 5 MS Office Suite (2003 w/conversion pk to 2007; 2000 also available still) SAS SPSS Stata v. 11 TELEform Suite Visio 2003 Winzip Programming tools Storage space Network shares Backups

How do I Sign Up for Access to Terminal Server? If you are a K Scholar or employee of the DEB…you already have it!

OK…How do I get in, and what do I Need to Know??

So Glad you Asked. Here are some Basic Principles of File Management in Terminal Server The M Drive The Local Hard Drive Knowing the location of your files
