Braidwood Status Report Jonathan Link Columbia University APS Study, Reactor Working Group February 7&8, 2004

Braidwood Basics Owned and operated by Exelon, the largest produced of nuclear power in the U.S. Braidwood is the second largest duel reactor site in the U.S. and fifth in the world. Braidwood’s maximim power output is 7.17 GW (thermal) and its average capacity factor over the last seven years is 90%.

Braidwood Site Boundary

Plant Area with Boundary

Surface Near Baseline 200±20 meters 90 meters separate reactors 1 &2 Near Detector Location

L-4 L-2 L-3 A-3 P-3 A-39486 P-39285 L-29587 L-38784 L-410598 Bore # Depth Depth of Dolomitic Limestone Geological Data (Bore Holes) Nearest to the experiment (depth in meters) Dolomitic limestone layer goes from a depth of ~85 to ~195 meters. (212 to 487 mwe)

Natural Radioactivity Natural radioactivity goes to the floor in the dolomitic limestone layer

Elevation Along Detector Axis The preferred experimental line runs due east from the plant. The elevation plot shows it to be flat for over a mile and a half due east of the plant.

Exelon has agreed to work with us to determine the feasibility of using their reactors to perform the experiment. “We are excited about the possibility of participating in a scientific endeavor of this nature” “At this time we see no insurmountable problems that would preclude going forward with this project.” They have given us reams of geological data which we are currently digesting.

Civil Construction Studies We are currently gathering and processing all data relevant for a full study and preliminary design of the civil construction. Chris Laughton has arranged for a consultant to develop a cost and schedule for the excavation part of the civil construction. The contract will start on March 1 st and finish on March 15 th. Fermilab’s FESS engineering group has developed a cost model for all buildings and modifications to the tunnels, shafts and detector halls Larry Bartoszek has developed a design for detector vessel and transport.
