1 Twitter & Facebook Nuts, Bolts, and Privacy

2 What is Twitter? Twitter is a microblogging platform, consisting of very short entries (140 characters). This is less than the text message limit, which is 160 characters. It’s more about short declarations and posting links with some comment, closer to the original idea of blogging. Twitter is also public, although you can set it to be private so that only those who follow you can read your tweets.

3 Twitter Lexicon Tweet = A post RT = Retweet – Tells others you’re repeating someone else’s post (implying your approval) MT = Modified Tweet – Tells others you’re retweeting someone but with a slight modification. @ = Symbol denoting reference to another Twitter user (i.e. Congrats to @seanplatham on his promotion.) Hashtag = A content tag beginning with # (i.e. #modernism). These create separate subject streams that you can follow and which are also searchable. Excellent for backchannel conversations at conferences or meetings.

7 Facebook Privacy You can change your Facebook privacy settings so that only friends can view your Wall, Pictures, etc. BUT: Private companies like Facebook collect info about YOU, identifying YOU, and sell it to harvesters.
