TED was the first program on our campus (1920’s). TED recently revised and updated all of its programs to meet with new PDE mandates. PDE is now emphasizing special education: –TED has offered special education for 40+ years. –TED has 2 fully credentialed and experienced special education faculty members. As we revised our programs, we did not have to add special education to our program -- we already had it!

TED: Quality and Experience The programs offered by TED have earned "candidate status" awarded by the prestigious National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Our TED was the first program in the state reviewed and accredited under PDE’s 2001 standards, and among the first accredited under its 2010 guidelines.

Purpose of this Class Learn how the TED is situated, governed, and staffed. Learn how the curriculum and policies of the TED are required and regulated by PDE. Learn about teacher certification.

Virtus Training Virtus: Excellence Builds Trust Training required to enter parochial schools. 1 session – 2 hours. Child abuse awareness training. Why: –Many students will do class experience, field, or student teaching in a parochial school.

Understanding the IRP (Initial Review Process) and Professional Clearances

IRP: Just the Facts WHO: All new students. WHAT: TED faculty evaluate student status. WHEN: At the end of your second semester in TED. The TED Faculty monitor student progress at the end of every 2 semesters.

IRP Expectations 1.Achieved minimum 3.0 GPA. 2.Submit a copy of Praxis I (PPST) scores to your advisor. Should have taken all 3 by end of second semester on campus (May for most students). 3.Achieved a passing grade in TED 100 Education Seminar and field experience(s). Continued…

IRP Expectations 4.Obtained professional clearances: Act 34 Act 151 Act 114 Act 24 You will be submitting a copy of clearances in order to participate in TED 190 Ed Seminar Field.

Apply for Clearances Immediately! If you have not done so yet, apply as soon as possible for the Act 34, Act 151, and Act 114 clearances! –In order to participate in any TED field experiences, you must possess current background checks. –Act 34 and 151background checks are renewed annually, along with Act 24. Failure to have current background checks may delay or discount you from going into a school for field experience.

What do the clearances mean? Required for All Fields Act 34 (PA State Police Criminal Record Check). –Verifies you have no criminal background in PA. Act 151 (Child Abuse History Clearance). Verifies you have no child abuse history. Act 114 (Federal Criminal History) Verifies you have no federal criminal background. Act 24 (Arrest/Conviction Report) Verifies you have no arrests or convictions.

How do I apply for clearances? 3.Federal Criminal History Record (Act 114): http://www.pa.cogentid.com a)In advance: Register prior to going to the fingerprint site (required). Walk-in service is not allowed. Pay $28.75 fee online using credit/debit card. –You can pay in-person by money order or cashier check (no personal checks). Make checks payable to “Cogent Systems”. b)In person: Take photo ID with you (state-issued driver’s license, US passport, College-issued Student ID). www.pa.cogentid.com

How do I apply for clearances? 4.Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form (Act 24): Search for “Act 24” on Google. Verifies that you have no arrests or convictions: –Major crimes (homicide, assault, kidnapping). –Sexual crimes (rape, stalking, indecent exposure). –Crimes against children. –Drugs/controlled substance. Just sign and date, and check the box. PDE Act 24 page

Special Notes about Act 114 If you are not a PA resident, you need to obtain Act 114 within this state (even if you already obtained it in another state). Do not go to the PA State Police to be fingerprinted. Your fingerprints must be on file electronically. This clearance is obtained only once during your matriculation at MU.

TB Test In addition to the 4 clearances, you also need to get a TB test each year. Required for fieldwork. Keep a copy.

Delivery System How is instruction delivered? TED courses can consist of the following: –Modules. Learning activity packages, usually 1 per each objective. –Quizzes/tests. –Course projects/activities Paper, PowerPoint, poster, presentation. –Final exam.

Delivery System What Is a Module? Paper-based series of activities. –Questions to be answered. –Items to look up/research. –Activities/projects. May reflect learning outside of class as well as material discussed in class. Forms the notebook for the course. Submit to instructor to be graded. Quizzes and tests are usually based on modules. Assessment and Grading Course Grading Modules (40%). Course project(s) (10%). Final cumulative examination of course objectives (could be up to 50%). Most every course includes these 3 elements, although their grade value may be different in each course. Individual faculty will explain their policies.

Assessment and Grading Courses TED courses are based on 2 items: 1.The realities of high stakes assessment. 2.The mastery learning paradigm.

Assessment and Grading High Stakes Assessment Emphasis on final exams is based on “high stakes assessment.” FACT: MU students have to pass state tests to be a teacher. –Students must maintain an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 (required by PDE). FACT: Public school funding is based on students passing state tests.

Assessment and Grading Mastery Learning All students need to demonstrate mastery of all objectives, and not simply pass courses. Would you like to visit a dentist who graduated in the lower half of his/her class?

Assessment and Grading Mastery Learning Students must obtain a minimum final grade of a C+ in TED courses. –C or lower, you must repeat the course. –Only applies to TED courses, not core. Second Chance: Some TED professors will allow you to “recycle” or redo assignments to increase your mastery of the objectives.

Assessment and Grading Mastery Learning Mastery or better: A95+ A-92-94 B+89-91 B85-88 B-82-84 C+80-81 Non-mastery: C75-79 C-72-74 D67-71 F0-66 TED courses of C or less must be repeated.

Attendance Policy Class Attendance In our TED courses, we have a very simple attendance policy – we expect students to be present and prepared for each and every class. “Cuts” are not allowed. Some instructors will deduct points for cuts.

Attendance Policy Policies for In-Service Teachers What do teachers do if they are sick? Phone in and call off. Deliver lesson plans and materials. Note: Even for valid reasons, there is a limit to how many days teachers may miss. If they miss too many days, they can be suspended; in some cases, even dismissed.

Attendance Policy TED Attendance Procedures 1.Before missing class, inform Rose Hometchko (674-6270) of the date and reason for the absence. 2.Inform instructor(s) of upcoming absence. May leave a voice mail message. 3.If an instructor requires, present a brief note stating that you missed a class and why.

TED 190 Ed Seminar Field

Ed Seminar Field Will be conducted at a school district of your choice. Depending on scheduling, you could visit your home school district. Can request to be placed with 1 or 2 teachers in the same district as you desire. Schedule 2 or more visits (10 hours total).

Field Assignment For Next Week… A.Apply for Clearances 1.Collect the 4 professional clearances to copy and submit. 2.Apply for clearances (if you do not already have them). B.Choose School Placements 1.Select one (or two schools) where you can complete the 10-hour field experience.

Adding/Dropping/Withdrawing Add a course: –Until Monday after the 1 st week of classes. Drop a course: –Until end of 4 th week of classes. Withdraw from a course: –5 th through 8 th week of classes. Receive a “W.” –Not officially withdrawn: receive an “F.”

MU-Alert It is permissible to keep your cell phone on in class, provided that you place it in the vibrate mode. Sign up to receive emergency transmissions from the MU-Alert emergency notification system on e-MU.
