Nutrition during youth vitamins A,B,C and D Vitamin A Is required for cell division therefore an important aspect of growth. vessels Muscle Bone Blood cells These all divide rapidly during youth and therefore require vitamin A

Vitamin A Also helps with the development of immune system function by promoting mucus development in the lungs and airways Mucus is a defence mechanism against bacteria and viruses. Vitamin A helps in the development of antibodies required to fight infection.

Vitamin A found where In red yellow and orange coloured fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin D Main role of Vitamin D is in the absorption of calcium from the intestine into the bloodstreak. Lack of vitamin D can lead to low levels of calcium being absorbed and bones become weak. Where do we get vitamin D?

Vitamin C Important for the structure of tissue within the body and is required for building collagen (a protein that is required for the formation of skin, scar tissue tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C important In promoting the absorption of iron and is therefore an important nutrient in production of blood. Give 4 examples of vitamin c sources.

Soft tissue Give examples of soft tissue found in the body? Read page 91 “formation of soft tissue” Copy up figure 3.25 page 92 in to your notes. (learn this for homework)

Formation of hard tissue Bones Teeth Cartilage (nutrients needed for hard tissue formation are required in greater amounts during growth) Page 93 figure 3.26 copy up and learn for homework. Page 94 question 6

Components of blood and nutrients required Protein (main building material) Vitamin C (forms connective tissue and assits in iron absorption. Lipid (required for the formation of cell membranes Vitamin A (required for cell division) Iron (required for haem park of haemoglobin production Water Main component of blood

Food selection models

Homework 13/4/2015 Due Friday by email. Page 98 questions 1 - 7

KK tasks nutrition Identify two similarities between the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and the Healthy Living pyramid Obesity rates among youth in Australia have been steadily increasing over the past 20 years. Explain how the Healthy Living Pyramid could be used to assit individuals in reducing their energy intake. Jackie is 14 and has just become a vegetarian. Identify one food selection model and explain how it could assist Jackie in consuming foods that will provide her with the nutrients she needs to maintain optimal health and human development. Comment on the likely short and long term consequences that may occur if youth consume too much/too little of the key nutrients.
