2 After the Audition, What’s Next?  Go to your my.unt.edu student account to view your “To Do List” to make sure your Toulouse Graduate School application is complete. Remove any holds which may prevent you from registering.

3 Admission and Music Awards  You will be contacted by email whether you are admitted or denied in the College of Music.  After you are admitted, you will be contacted by the end of March with any offers of music awards including TA/TF appointments and scholarship decisions.  You must indicate your intent by April 15

4 Taking the GRE  The GRE for performance and jazz majors is not required, but highly recommended.  If you do not take the GRE, the Graduate Writing Exam (GWE) is offered during new student orientation to satisfy the graduate writing requirement.  Failure to fulfill GRE requirements will affect registration, financial aid, scholarships and TA/TF positions.

5 Transcript Evaluations  Your transcript will be evaluated only if you are admitted to the College of Music.  You will be sent your deficiencies (if any) to your email address. Get accustomed to using your my.unt.edu (EagleConnect) email address.

6 What Courses Should I Register For?  Registration for new graduate students began in mid- April. International students cannot register until they have attended UNT-International orientation and the hold is removed from their account.  All master’s performance students (except jazz) are required to take the research course, MUMH 5010. You can register for this course before orientation.  Start thinking about your related field (or elective courses for jazz majors). For related field options, go to your degree Handbook on the Graduate Studies website music.unt.edu/graduate.

8 What to Expect at New Student Orientation  Begins August 18, 2014 at 9am in the Music Building, Recital Hall Room 301  You will meet the College of Music Graduate Studies Office personnel:  Dr. Benjamin Brand, Director  Dr. Nicholas Williams, Associate Director  Dr. Colleen Conlon, Academic Counselor  Kelly Santa Maria, Assistant to the Director  You will meet your Division Chair  You will meet your Area Coordinator

9 Graduate Placement Exams (GPE)  Music History exemption policy and form is located on the Graduate Studies website at music.unt.edu/graduate  You may waive any or all exams and instead take the courses. The GPE Waiver form is located at music.unt.edu/graduate

10 GPE: Music History  Pre-1750 multiple choice questions  Post-1750 multiple choice questions  60 questions each, 6 based on listening excerpts  Pre-1750 multiple choice questions & 1 essay  Post-1750 multiple choice questions & 1 essay  30 questions each, 6 based on listening excerpts Masters Doctoral

11 GPE: Music Theory  Consists of Four Exams  Ear Training: Diction  Part-Writing (chorale) and Analysis  Sight Singing  Keyboard (harmonizing or figured bass)

12 Graduate Writing Exam (GWE) for Performance majors  Performance area requires an in-house Graduate Writing Exam.  An acceptable GRE Verbal Exam score can be substituted for the writing exam. If you had your GRE scores sent to UNT, we should have them. If your GRE score is not showing in your student center at my.unt.edu, email Kelly.SantaMaria@unt.edu for further information. 13 Graduate Writing Exam (GWE) for Jazz Studies majors  Jazz Studies area requires an in-house Graduate Writing Exam.  An acceptable GRE Analytical Writing Exam score can be substituted for the in-house Writing Exam. This score must have been submitted prior to enrollment.  Failure to fulfill the writing exam requirement (or GRE substitute) will affect registration, financial aid, scholarships and TA/TF positions.

14 Degree Time Limits Master’s – 5 years Doctoral – 8 years If you have extenuating circumstances, you may appeal for a time extension before your time runs out.
