2  Scheduled for Wednesday afternoons from 4-5PM › You must be picked up promptly at 5:00. › Please take a minute to call or text your parents if necessary.  If you cannot be picked up at 5:00, you will need to register for The Cove Academy.

3  On my website www.quia.com/pages/mrsmclaughlin/mathclub This form MUST be turned in no later than Wed. Sept. 17 th in order to be a part of the club and participate in competitions.

5  AMC 8 / AMC 10  Math Olympiad  Math Counts Club and Competition  BCCTM  Rubik’s Cube tournament  Mu Alpha Theta  New – AMC weekly Math Tournament

6  Teams are chosen based on performance in the club. The points you earn during each competition will add up to your overall score.

7  Competition date: › Tuesday November, 18 th  You MUST register to take this exam no later than October 1 st (form on website) › Registration forms received after October 1 st will be placed on a waiting list in order of receipt.  All students who are younger than 14.5 years old on November 18 th are eligible to participate.

8  February – date TBA  Students who are older than 14.5 on Nov. 18 th are eligible for the AMC 10 (not the AMC 8)  Younger students who earn at least a 20 out of 25 on the AMC 8 are eligible to participate in the AMC 10

9  Two teams this year of up to 35 students  6 th graders will be on one team  7 th and 8 th graders will be on a separate team › Competition dates:  Wednesday, November 19 th  Wednesday, December 17 h  Wednesday, January 14 th  Wednesday, February 11 th  Wednesday, March 11 th

10  How many quarters (worth 25 cents each) must be added to 12 nickels (worth 5 cents each), so that the average value of a coin in the new enlarged collection is 10 cents?  Answer: 4 quarters

11  Club information: › Last year we became a gold school for the third year in a row. › Silver Status – earned by having a minimum number of meetings and students attend (easy) › Gold Status – This year’s challenge is to create puzzles and games. More info coming soon.  Competition Dates: › Chapter Competition in February › State Competition in March › National Competition in May – Boston, MA

12  The heights of six students Joe, Mary, Sue, Steve, Lisa and John are 60 inches, 64 inches, 58 inches, 68 inches, 63 inches and 69 inches. Sue is 4 inches shorter than Joe. The girls are the three shortest students. Steve is 1 inch shorter than John. Mary is the shortest student. What is the sum of John’s height and Lisa’s height?  Answer: 132

14  High school honor society › ONLY students enrolled in a HIGH SCHOOL math course are eligible to participate. (GEM 7, GEM 8, Algebra, etc.)  Hiller/Nunn Contest – Wednesday, Dec. 3 rd  Upcoming competitions:  Jan. 31 – Regionals – Braddock HS, Miami  Feb. 14 th – Regionals – Ferguson HS, Miami  Mar. 7 th – Regionals – FAU, Davie  Mar. 21 st – Cypress Bay Statewide (this is a Saturday during spring break)  Must work ahead in text book to be prepared for competitions.  ***Practice old tests at www.famat.org***

15  Late September through December  Tournament style – done on computers  All students in Math Club are eligible to participate (no minimum)  More information coming soon

16  Do we want to have Falcon Cove’s 2 nd Rubik’s Cube tournament???

17  Since there are more competitions this year, I will be emailing home optional practice material weekly.
