2. Prepared by ITH ESARA The Uses Quotation Marks  Points to remember There are two kinds of quotation marks: single quotation marks [ ‘---’ ] and double quotation marks [ “---” ]. There are two ways to use quotations: 1.to quote the exact words (direct speech) of the speakers or writers. 2.to quote the captions of short works such as books, movies, … or a piece of a long text.

Any punctuation for closing quoting statement goes at the end of quotations, inside the quotation marks. [ “---.” ],[ “---,” ],[ “---?” ],[ “---!” ],… Examples The teacher ordered, “Don’t go there ” “You have to do exercise regularly ” doctor said. “Wow, I passed ” He greeted. “Are you a couch potato?” He asked. ! ?

Examples “We have,” the workers cried, “the same right.” “We found enough evidences,” said the police. “Therefore, the judge can charge a former Major General of National Police.”,,,...

Sometimes, quoting statement in such a case can be shown in italicized or underlined writing Examples The proverb ‘When you are in Rome, do as Romance do’ is very famous. The proverb When you are in Rome, do as the Romance do is very famous. OR

[ “--- ‘---’ ---.” ] Example Our teacher said, “ Please open your book ‘Effective Writing Skills 2’ on page 80 and do the exercises in it. ” “ Did you know our leader said, ‘The development and I is the one thing,’ to his followers? ” Sam asked me.
