Maximising LinkedIn

The statistics Over 175+ million members in over 200 countries (10+ million in the UK) 2 new members approx. every second More than 62% of users are outside of the US Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are LinkedIn members LinkedIn represents a valuable demographic for marketers with an affluent and influential membership A Profile should be well optimised so it can be found in searches, and so that it is compelling once found Profile details can be changed at any time e.g. adding a company Twitter account or change of role.

LinkedIn Optimisation Checklist Upload a professional image Optimise your profile using (customer friendly) keywords: Use a compelling ‘Headline’ rather than your job title Add your keywords into your ‘Current’ position details and fully describe what you do from your customers’ perspective, ensuring your ‘Company Name’ links to your company’s page if it is set up Add at least two ‘Past’ positions, again using your keywords (if possible) and full descriptions Use the ‘Summary’ section to really describe what you do for your customers; this is a big chance to sell yourself in your current role Complete the ‘Specialities’ section as a bulleted list of your skills and services ensuring you include your keywords; this can be a long list! Don’t forget to complete the ‘Skills & Expertise’ section Add in your ‘Interests’ and ‘Groups & Associations’ and any ‘Honors & Awards’

LinkedIn Optimisation Checklist Edit your Public Profile settings (use the drop down next to your name top right and then select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Edit your Public Profile’): Make sure that you are showing your credentials and what you offer to anyone searching for you Change your Public URL to a more easy to remember version Edit ‘Contact Info’: Add your website(s) to your profile (‘edit Contact Info’) as ‘Other’ so you can use a keyword rich description rather than ‘Company Website’. More compelling for click-throughs as well as better for search Add your Twitter profile, or your company Twitter name Get Recommendations either by requesting them directly from the most appropriate people or by giving a recommendation to them first and then they may reciprocate (you need at least three Recommendations for LinkedIn to deem your profile complete) Consider adding relevant LinkedIn Apps to enhance your profile.

LinkedIn Optimisation Checklist Using Groups Use the ‘Groups Directory’ to find Groups that might be of interest and use to you. Start by selecting ‘Groups’ and ‘Groups You May Like’ from the toolbar. This will use your profile to select and suggest appropriate groups for you. Join Groups and follow discussions. Like comments and add your own comments to demonstrate your helpfulness and knowledge Consider starting your own Group. Select ‘Create a Group’ from the ‘Groups’ link on the navbar. This works best when you have a wide network and following already to get critical mass. Using Answers Using the ‘More’ link on the Toolbar select Answers. This is where you can ask questions and demonstrate your own expertise by answering Questions posed by other members. Use the ‘Advanced Answers Search’ to find the most appropriate questions by keyword and category.
