Identify Infrastructure Assessment products and knowledge outcomes. Incorporating strategic export initiatives into CEDS. Other exporting resources. 2

3 Regional Exporting Approaches: Germany Exports accounted for 47% of GDP in 2010. SMEs account for 98% of German exporters. Transportation and manufacturing are most export- dependent. Many have high-technology, research and development- intensive, high-value exports. Regional cluster internationalization strategies. Each region has a development bank that enables SMEs to access business development loans. 3

4 EUREGIO – Bi-national regional organization. Netherlands/North Rhine-Westphalia region. Highly industrialized region with a population of 16.7 million in Netherlands and 17.8 million in North Rhine-Westphalia Manages and funds projects such as INTER-NED and 2 Connect. Works to foster bi-national municipal cooperation. INTER-NED Targeted German and Dutch SMEs and freelancers. 6 Öresund Region Swedish-Danish Baltic Sea region Comprised of 2 developed counties and 3 rural counties. Öresund University (Malmö, Sweden) and its partners developing cross-border region as an internationally- competitive science region. CrossBorder Öresund Project to increase labor mobility and remove market barriers. 6 Bi-National Regional Collaboration Strategies

7 Brookings Institute Export Strategies Four pilot U.S. metropolitan area export plans: Syracuse, NY; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; Los Angeles, CA; Portland, OR. All had new-to-export program recommendations. Three were one-on-one programs linking new exporters with established exporters. Identified specific target industries for export development. Developed regional marketing strategies for exports. 7
