What you need to know BIOE 1000

We bring life to engineering! Your first week at UT You may have a lot of questions or even encountered a problem We will attempt to address some common issues raised by other 1 st year students If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me for help!!

We bring life to engineering! Keeping up with classes YOU’RE NOT IN HIGH SCHOOL ANYMORE! Subjects are more difficult Competition for good grades is more intense Subjects build upon previous classes Falling behind now makes it only harder for you later on Keeping your GPA up is very important for co-op positions and scholarship opportunities

We bring life to engineering! Keeping up with classes Attend all classes – don’t skip lectures Make studying your first priority – Work on assigned problems even if they are not graded Seek help if you’re overwhelmed – LEC: http://www.ucollege.utoledo.edu/lec/http://www.ucollege.utoledo.edu/lec/ – CASE center: http://www.eng.utoledo.edu/undergrads.htm http://www.eng.utoledo.edu/undergrads.htm – Possible BMES study tables? The Math & Chem departments will inform us of your progress in their classes

We bring life to engineering! Calc & Chem classes Large classes – the quality of instruction varies across sections See me if you have a problem or complaint about your instructor We have a process to correct problems in other departments or colleges You must have a specific issue that we can document “I don’t like” a particular instructor is not sufficient

We bring life to engineering! Withdrawing from classes You may need to withdraw from a class due to illness or inability to keep up An instructor can also withdraw students if they stop attending The withdrawal will appear on your transcript Be prepared to explain your withdrawal to a potential employer, medical school, graduate school, etc.

We bring life to engineering! Withdrawing from classes DO NOT STOP ATTENDING CLASS if you are thinking about withdrawing Some scholarships require 30 hours per year 12 hours per semester is minimum to qualify as a full time student There are certain deadlines for withdrawing from classes See me first before you withdraw

We bring life to engineering! Important Dates 90% tuition refund deadline for withdrawing from classes: Friday, August 30 th Drop/Add deadline: Monday, September 9 th – Also 60% tuition refund deadline Withdrawal deadline: Friday, October 18 th Registration for Spring classes begins: beginning of October 2002 Deadline for payment of Spring tuition/fees: December 21, 2002

Residence Halls If you have any problems or concerns, see your RA If your RA does not resolve the problem, you can approach the unit director next BEWARE: Underage drinking is a serious offense – Can end up on your UT record – Can result in termination of residence contract – Can result in criminal charges

We bring life to engineering! Honors Program Is it harder? – Not necessarily more difficult, usually more work – Requires cumulative GPA > 3.3 – Requires a minimum of 33 hrs in Honors courses – 6 hrs are Readings Conferences, 10 hrs in major Advantages – You graduate with honors citation and get a nice medallion – You can register before everyone else My suggestion: Give it a chance!

We bring life to engineering! Pre-Med Programs Any BioE student qualifies as a Pre-Med major if they complete Organic Chemistry I & II course & laboratory We offer additional programs for qualified Pre-Med Students BS/MD program with MCO – Guaranteed admission to Medical School at MCO – Must have 3.8 HS GPA / 29 on ACT – Must graduate with 3.5 GPA (overall & BIOE) – Interview with MCO faculty & score 27 on MCAT – Must apply to get into program – let me know!

We bring life to engineering! Pre-Med Programs Accelerated Pre-Med Program – Complete Bioengineering degree in 4 years – Co-op in summers only – Must have 3.5 GPA after 1 st semester – Must maintain 3.5 GPA through 2 nd year MEDStart Program offered by MCO – Summer research program before senior year – Must have 3.7 GPA, no MCAT score required For more details on these programs, ask me or see http://www.bioe.eng.utoledo.edu/undergraduate/prem ed.htm http://www.bioe.eng.utoledo.edu/undergraduate/prem ed.htm
