3 Roberto Clemente

4 Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico. They did not have money for baseballs, so they wrapped old golf balls with string and tape. He was taught to share because he didn’t have much. -Dynasty Roberto Clemente

5 As Roberto grew taller and stronger he continued to practice baseball. He got really good and the Pittsburg Pirates asked him to play for their team. Roberto had 23 homeruns in 1961. -Ethan Roberto Clemente

6 Roberto Clemente helped others who needed help. He taught children how to play baseball. Roberto taught people how to care about one another. There was an earthquake in 1972. -Kalib Roberto Clemente

7 Roberto wanted to go and help the people from the earthquake. He packed food, clothing, and medicine in boxes. He got on an airplane. The airplane crashed into the water. Roberto died from the crash. Roberto helped others when they needed help. -Kentarion Roberto Clemente

8 Yoshiko Uchida

9 Yoshiko Uchida lived in Berkeley, California with her parents and sister. Yoshiko’s parents and many neighbors were from Japan. Yoshiko’s family followed Japanese customs like Doll’s Day. Yoshiko wanted to be Japanese and still be an American. Other people thought she couldn’t be both. -Tiffany Yoshiko Uchida

10 Yoshiko Uchida taught second grade at a camp built by the army. After the war was over, they closed down the camp and the people left to make new homes. She was a teacher but wanted to be an author. She wrote about Japanese customs. She wanted everyone to love what she loved. -Nolan Yoshiko Uchida

11 Eleanor Roosevelt

12 Eleanor Roosevelt was born over one hundred years ago. She was scared of almost everything. Slowly she learned that she wanted to help people. -Alexis Eleanor Roosevelt

13 When Eleanor Roosevelt grew up she wanted to marry Franklin Roosevelt. He became one of the presidents of our country. Franklin got sick and couldn’t use his legs. Eleanor went to visit schools and hospitals for him. She went home to tell Franklin that people needed help. -Hayley Eleanor Roosevelt

14 Eleanor worked hard for her husband but she had her own projects too. She started a furniture business to make new jobs for the poor people. Then she helped run a girls’ school. She also taught history. Later, Mrs. Roosevelt helped build homes for people in places where they could find new jobs. -Brianna Eleanor Roosevelt

15 Eleanor Roosevelt said it doesn’t matter if you are white or black. She helped write about how people should be treated fairly. People loved her because she was kind. -Merly Eleanor Roosevelt

16 Dr. Alexa Canady

17 When Alexa Canady was little, she wanted to be like Florence Nightingale. She wanted to help other people. When Alexa Canady grew up she became a surgeon. -Megan Alexa Canady

18 Dr. Canady wanted to help a boy named Justin. He was hurt playing soccer. He was taken to Dr. Canady to get his knee looked at. Dr. Canady used special tools to check his knee. -Zain Alexa Canady

19 Dr. Canady used a special light for Justin’s ear. Dr. Canady decided to send Justin to the hospital for a special test. When the tests were over, Dr. Canady decided Justin needed an operation. -Latoriana Alexa Canady

20 Alexa Canady helped Justin by telling him everything was okay. Doctor Canady visited him everyday in the hospital. Doctor Canady helped many people like Justin. -Brooke Alexa Canady

21 Louis Braille

22 Louis Braille became blind when he was five, but his dad thought he could still read and write. He believed he could still go to college. Since Louis could not see, he had to learn many things all over. -Caleb Louis Braille

23 Louis Braille could not see pictures or words. He could only learn by listening. He had to remember everything the teacher said. The students read by feeling the letters that were carved in wooden blocks. -Cameron Louis Braille

24 When he was 15, Louis thought of a new method to teach blind people how to read. He made the method of feeling raised dots to read. He only used six raised dots for the whole alphabet. This method was an easier way than the blind people used to read. -Quentin Louis Braille

25 Louis Braille’s method helped blind people and today machines use Braille’s method. These machines help people to read and write. When Louis Braille died not many people knew of him. Schools in the United States started to use his method. Louis Braille’s method helped blind people all over the world. -Lamarr Louis Braille

26 Thomas Edison

27 Thomas Edison did lots of weird things when he was a little boy. One of them was setting a barn on fire. Another was trying to hatch an egg by sitting on it. He also fell into a bin full of grain. -Jonny Thomas Edison

28 When Thomas Edison got older, he sold the inventions he made and used the money to build his laboratory. He invented the light bulb. It took him two years. He didn’t go to sleep. He took naps in his laboratory instead of going to bed. -Olivia Thomas Edison

29 He made the world a better place by inventing many things. Some things he invented were the phonograph, projector, and the light bulb. We still use these inventions today. -Jeremiah Thomas Edison
