4 “Could I be like Florence Nightingale and help sick soldiers?” thought Alexa Canady. Alexa read about Florence Nightingale when she was a little girl. When Alexa grew up, she became a surgeon. -Devin Alexa Canady

5 Alexa Canady has helped many people. One of the children Alexa has helped is Justin. Justin got hurt playing soccer with his friends. -Sheldon Alexa Canady

6 Dr. Canady asked Justin some questions. Justin had to have an operation after Dr. Canady gave him some tests. -Tramayne Alexa Canady

7 Dr. Canady wears a mask and a gown and gloves to keep the germs from spreading. She makes a difference by helping people when they are hurt. -Kateanne Alexa Canady

8 Louis Braille

9 Louis Braille was almost five years old and living in France when he became totally blind. His dad still believed in him even though he was blind. -Brianna Louis Braille

10 Louis Braille went to school and used special steel books. Then someone came to show them a better method of reading and writing for blind people, which gave him an idea. -Teresa Louis Braille

11 His idea was to use raised dots to read. He thought that raised dots would be easier to feel than the old method of feeling holes in paper. He was only 15 when he invented this method. -Kayla Louis Braille

12 Later, a student in the United States started using his method, which is now called Braille. Soon people in the United States and in schools all over the world started using Braille. Today, people use machines and computers to use Louis’ method. -August Louis Braille

13 Roberto Clemente

14 Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico. He really wanted to be an athlete. Roberto Clemente couldn’t afford real baseballs, so he wrapped old golf balls in tape and string. -Spencer Roberto Clemente

15 His family had to learn to share those homemade baseballs. He played baseball everyday with his friends. The Pirates asked Roberto to be on their team. -Tiger Roberto Clemente

16 Roberto Clemente had 23 homeruns and he was very famous. Roberto Clemente heard an earthquake. He wanted to help the hurt people. -Teran Roberto Clemente

17 So he packed up his stuff and packed medicine in a box. He got on an airplane. The plane crashed into the ocean. He was chosen to be in the Hall of Fame. Robert Clemente made a difference in the world by going to children’s hospitals and helping them. -Khalima Roberto Clemente

18 Thomas Edison

19 As a boy, Thomas Edison got in a lot of trouble when he was small. Because of his curiosity, he became an inventor. -Jonathon. Thomas Edison

20 Thomas Edison invented the projector and the phonograph in his special laboratory. He sold some of his inventions. -McKenzie Thomas Edison

21 Thomas Edison tried for two years to make the light bulb work. On October 19, 1879, his light bulb finally worked. -Dana Thomas Edison

22 The light bulb burned for 40 hours – almost 2 days! Thomas Edison made all kinds of different light bulbs. There were skinny ones, small ones, and big ones. -Jessica Thomas Edison

23 The light bulb was one of his most important inventions. Thomas Edison’s invention of the bulb has made the world better because people can see better in the dark. -Sophia Thomas Edison

24 Eleanor Roosevelt

25 When Eleanor Roosevelt was little, she was scared of everything. When she was ten, her parents died. -Lauren Eleanor Roosevelt

26 Eleanor married Franklin Roosevelt. Franklin was the leader of our country. He was the president for 12 years. Franklin Roosevelt could not use his legs and got sick and died. -David Eleanor Roosevelt

27 Eleanor Roosevelt thought her work was over because her husband died, but it wasn’t. Eleanor made a girl’s school. She also helped create jobs for people. When Eleanor was little, she had no friends and when she grew up, she had many friends and she was loved by the whole world. -Destiny Eleanor Roosevelt
