39. When did you last tell your child that you liked being with her? When did you last ask for your child’ views when making a family decision? Think of two things you praised you child for last week. Did you use more than two put- downs? Can you think of five things your child is particularly good at? Does your child know that she is good at them? Do you ever do something for your child because it is quicker and easier when she could easily have managed herself?

40. Are you prepared to apologize to your child if necessary? Can you still feel proud of your child if she has chosen to go out in scruffy ill-matched clothes? Do you know which times of the day your child is most likely to want to talk to you? Do you every buy your child things out of guilt?
