2 Report 2006 What is ESFRI? A European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures Launched in April 02 Brings together representatives of the 25 Member States, 7 Associated States, and one representative of the European Commission (EC) ESFRI European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures

4 Report 2006 19/10/2006 - Brussels Press Conference – European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures The Roadmap Mandate from the Council of Ministers, November 2004; The Roadmap is the result of two years of intensive work; about 1000 high-level experts were involved giving the end product credibility and quality. 200 projects have been evaluated It is the beginning of an ongoing process

7 Report 2006 19/10/2006 - Brussels Press Conference – European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures Social Science and Humanities 1.CESSDA (Council of European Social Science Data Archives) is a distributed RI provides access to data (21 countries in Europe) 1.CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) is to make language resources available (grid & semantic web technology 1.DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for Arts and Humanities) based on existing network, open access to cultural heritage of Europe 1.EROHS (European Resource Observatory for the Humanities and the Social Sciences) will operate both as a central and distrubuted facility; integration of data, technologies and policies 1.ESS (The European Social Survey) /27 European countries) produce data for researchers 1.SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirementin Europe) provides data for researhers

9 Report 2006 19/10/2006 - Brussels Press Conference – European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures Environmental Sciences 1.AURORA BOREALIS (Research icebreaker) for deep drilling capability for use in extreme conditions in high latitude oceans 2.EMSO (European multidisciplinary seafloor obervation), a continuous monitoring system for environment and security 3.EUFAR, a Heavy-Payload fleet of airborne research in Environmental and Geo-Sciences 4.EURO-ARGO, a worlds wide in situ global ocean observing system based on autonomous profiling floats 5.IAGOS-ERI uses, as platforms, commercial passenger airgrafts and operate as a RI for regular observations of atmospheric composition 6.ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), observational data of the greenhouse balance of Europe 7.LIFE WATCH, biodiversity RI brings together hardware, software and governance structures
