1 Bryophytes Mini-Lab #1

2 Mini Lab Activity #1 Need TWO more Circle on the BACK-use petri dishes
Three Slides Capsule (sporangia) CS Gametangia (antheridia, archegonia) CS Protonemia CS One Sample - Moss sample (draw on back) DS Need TWO more Circle on the BACK-use petri dishes Draw The Entire field of vision Use digital camera, cell phone, etc for future Be sure to write a title above each circle indicating what the sample is. Look at the slide label Magnification must be written below your drawing Include the following labels in your drawings: Sample (sporophyte & gametophyte, seta, capsule, calyptera, annulus, operculum, peristome. Protonema: spore & filamentous cells Gametangia: antheridia (sperm) or archegonia (egg) Capsule: annulus, peristome, spores (use the chart posted) 2

3 Life Cycle of Bryophyta (pg. 581)

4 Bryophytes “Non-Vascular plants”
Evolved over mya Over 15,000 species Includes: Liverworts (Hepatophyta) Hornworts (Anthocerophyta) Mosses (Bryophyta) Peat Moss (Sphagnum) Grow very small: No lignin (short stature) Exists close to the water’s edge No vascular tissue Gametophyte generation is dominant (haploid) Sperm is flagellated (must swim to the female) Reproductive structures form in these gametangia: Male: antheridium Female: archegonium 4

5 Key Structures to know for the Moss (pgs. 580-581)
Protonema: filament of highly branched cells developed from a germinated spore large surface area for absorbing water Rhizoids: long, tubular cells that anchor the plant not considered roots (lack vascular, conductive cells) Most of it doesn’t absorb water or nutrients Sporophyte: Foot, seta (stalk), annulus, and capsule Calyptera: protective cap over the operculum & annulus Peristome: tooth-like structure that gradually releases the spores from the capsule. (50 million per capsule) Specific Genus Examples: (see pg. 582) Sphagnum (peat mosses) Marchantia (liverworts) Anthoceros (hornwort) 5

6 Antheridia & Archegonia (Gametangia)

7 Protonema Filaments (germinated spores)

8 Capsule & Spores
