William Penn William Penn- Founded Pennsylvania in 1681 with a charter from the King of England. Penn wanted the colony to be a haven for members of his religion the Quakers.

Quakers The Quakers were a protestant group, also known as the society of friends.

Quakers cont. Quakers are pacifist, dress plainly, have no rankings in the church, and they have no formal ministers (everyone gets a chance to speak at church services including women). Not Popular in England

Penn offered settlers 50 acres of free land to come to the colony.
Pennsylvania Penn offered settlers 50 acres of free land to come to the colony. He planed a major city for the colony. “the city of brotherly love”

Other groups come to Pennsylvania
Penn advertised the colony in Europe and Germans, Dutch, and French immigrants came to Pennsylvania.

Native Americans in Pennsylvania
The Quakers preached tolerance, cooperation, and most of all friendship. Quakers treated the Native Americans well. Penn set up courts with both NAs and colonists. There was peaceful trade with NAs in Pennsylvania.

New Netherland Area around New York explored by Henry Hudson. New Netherland- A colony set up by the Dutch West India Company. -For profit colony fur trading was a major source of income.

Life in the colony New Netherland was a very diverse colony. (1/5 African) The Dutch were religiously tolerance. (1st Jewish community in North America) The Dutch traded with and respected the Iroquois.

English Takeover England wanted to take over the Dutch colony. James, Duke of York Peter Stuyvesant, the governor, was unpopular and the people did not defend the city. The English take the city peacefully.

New Netherland became New York Delaware and New Jersey given to friends of the Duke Georgia founded originally as a place for debtors to start a new Maryland was given by the King to Lord Baltimore (Catholic colony)
