1 Unit 1, Day 2: Impulse Momentum Theory HW Due: “Impulse” YouTube Video
January 15th (odd) or 16th (even)

2 As you walk in… Pick up the following paper:
Rube Goldberg Research Worksheet Prepare to turn in the following papers: Human Rights Topic Research (2 pages from project packet)

3 Agenda Turn in Research Worksheet (2 min) Announcements (5 min)
Homework Quiz (10 min) Intro Activity for Class Topic (28 min) Booklet Notes for Class Topic (25 min) Break (5 min) Practice (16 min) Update Learning Log (2 min) Project Work Time (10 min) Write Down HW (2 min)

4 Pass Human Rights Research In
Remember, high quality work = your choice in topic! When groups are made, seating chart will change to match

5 Announcements Pick up art by Friday 1/17. (Check DP)
Updated Office Hours: 75% grade = must attend 1/week Dress Code: Collar / DV shirt must be visible all the time Behavioral Reflection: Warning  Sent Outside  RH Homework: HW Quiz (Open Note) Every Day! DP Address: On any worksheet

6 Homework Quiz 7 Minutes Two Forms
Open Note (notes should be in booklet) Notes will be stamped so other students don’t use them No Calculator

7 15 Minute Challenge – Naked Egg Drop
Using given materials, construct a catching device for a naked egg dropped from 8 ft (hand against ceiling outside) Everything must remain in container during & after drop You can build higher than the edges, but 1st rule still applies DO NOT ALTER FOIL CONTAINERS IN ANY WAY!!!! Alterable Supplies: 2 pieces bread, 1 toilet paper roll, 1 cup flour (baggie can be used as well), 1 tape dispenser, 4 paper plates Unlimited supplies: computer paper & water Contraption should be able to stand on its own

8 Naked Egg Drop Challenge
Prepare container Prepare person who will drop from 8 feet high DO NOT START UNTIL I AM THERE TO WITNESS!

9 Naked Egg Drop Challenge (TPS)
Notebook Reflection Date: 1/15 or 1/16 Were you successful or unsuccessful? What traits do you think help prevent the egg from breaking?

10 Booklet Panel 3 (top): Impulse-Momentum Theorem
Write small, try to copy my spacing

11 Break 5 Minutes

12 Practice on Momentum & Impulse
Write work and answer in your notebook. You can refer to page 1 of the booklet for momentum You can refer to page 3 of the booklet for impulse

13 Practice on Momentum What is the equation for momentum? p = m x v

14 Practice on Momentum A baseball has a mass of 0.2 kg and is thrown at a velocity of 17 m/s. What is its momentum? Show calculations. 2.55 (kg*m)/s

15 Practice on Momentum Discuss with a neighbor:
If someone says that an object’s momentum is to the left, which way is its velocity? Its mass? Make sure to record the answer in your notebook! The object’s velocity is also to the left. The mass is a trick question, it has no direction.

16 Practice on Momentum Discuss with a neighbor: Which of the following has more momentum? Justify your answer! A heavy truck at rest A moving skateboard Make sure to record the answer in your notebook! A heavy truck at rest has a velocity of 0 m/s, so regardless of its mass, it would have a momentum of 0 (kg*m)/s. The skateboard has a mass and velocity, which would always multiply to a greater number than the truck.

17 Practice on Momentum You throw a chicken at your best friend b/c you think this is the best way to express your love. You know that the chicken has a momentum of 15 (kg*m)/s and has a mass of 3 kg. What is the chicken’s velocity? Show your work.

18 Practice on Impulse Discuss with a neighbor: 2 identical cars are driving the same speed. The first car stops in 2 seconds, the other stops in 4 seconds. Which one will experience more force and why? (Doesn’t require a calculation) Make sure to record the answer in your notebook! Since they have the same mass and same change in velocity, they have the same change in momentum. But the first car has a shorter time to impact, so it experiences a greater force.

19 Practice on Impulse Discuss with a neighbor: Why is a good idea to have your hand stretched forward when you are getting ready to catch a baseball? Make sure to record the answer in your notebook!

20 Update Learning Log Knowledge Targets: #1, #2, #3
Reasoning Targets: A, B, C Rating: 5: “We learned that? Where am I? Who are you?” 6: “I’ve heard it before…” 7: “I remember the definition” 8: “I remember the definition & can calculate simple stuff” 9: “I am a beast at this topic”

21 Project Research Due Friday 1/17
Look up TWO (EVEN PERIODS) videos (longer than 2 min) for Rube Goldberg machines Write down as many “steps” (Cause & Effect) as you see Which ones do you like? What materials would you need?

22 Homework “Types of Collisions” YouTube Video due Fri 1/17
Link is on DP. Takes notes on Panel 4 of booklet. Rube Goldberg Research Worksheet
