3 Introduction Agribusiness marketing is currently estimated at US $ 150 Million with projected growth. International agribusiness is positioning the Africa to feed the future. According to CAADP, investments in market access requires an initial investment of US $62 billion over some 10 to 15 years while operation and maintenance of these assets will require an additional US $37 billion.

4 Regional Markets Africa is on the right path of intra-regional trade, but lags behind other global regions. Exports from Africa increased significantly in the last 8 years. Intra-regional trade within emerging Asia increased 8 fold. Africa remains low and accounts for less than 10% of world total trade. IRT grown by 49 per cent in the last five years (EAC) Increased investments in foreign direct investment (FDI) almost tripled from $ 692 million (Sh913.4 billion) in 2002 to $ 1.7billion (Sh2.2 trillion) in 2007. The trade is both informal and formal trade.

9 The Regional Food Balance Sheet (RFBS) It is a reflection of the food security picture at a given time indicating availability, through production estimates and trade It has mostly been prepared by governments through respective Ministries of Agriculture, private sector, millers, traders and farmers EAGC is spearheading efforts for the regional balance sheet with EAC and partners

10 Rationale for RFBS Initiative anchored in the EAC Regional Food Security Action Plan Great potential for food surplus and trade in the region This evidence/information is presently not readily available hence ad-hoc policy decisions to protect national interests Information on regionally available food stock to inform food security policy Regional staple foods trade development – better prices, movement of foods from surplus to deficit region Investments in agriculture as a result of predictable policies.
