What changes took place in the Cotton Textile Industry? L/O – To describe how the cotton textile industry changed and identify how machines changed the way people worked Starter – A revolution is a dramatic and far- reaching change. Could the changes in farming started by enclosure be called a ‘revolution’?

According to Edward Baines, what has made these changes possible?

What was the Industrial Revolution? enclosure You have already studied the agricultural revolution – the dramatic changes that took place in farming due to enclosure. Dramatic changes were also taking place in Industry where people began to make goods in factories rather than by hand at home. Industrial Revolution = a period of great change after about 1770 when people began to make goods in factories using machines. 4 What was industry like before the industrial revolution? Britain’s most successful industry since Medieval times was making and selling woollen and cotton clothes. Domestic System These clothes were mostly made at home by peasant families as a way of earning extra income. This was called the ‘Domestic System’. This involved whole families working to spin wool and cotton into yarn then weaving the yarn into cloth which could then be dyed and sold to the clothier. 5 The Domestic System in action

Inventions in the Cotton Industry population was growing Demand for clothes increased because the population was growing. This meant cloth had to be produced quickly and in larger quantities. even more money Rich cloth merchants and clothiers also wanted to make and sell even more cloth to make even more money! made sold more profits more clothes If more cloth could be made, more cloth could be sold – which meant more profits for the clothiers and more clothes for the rising population! new machines This lead to new machines being developed to speed up cloth-making. 1. Explain why new machines were developed to speed up the cloth-making process 2. Why couldn’t the old domestic system provide enough cloth to meet the new demand?

Comparing Inventions carefully 1.Look carefully at your completed chart. information explain detail a)Choose the information from your chart to complete each of these statements. Try to explain in as much detail as possible: – All the cotton inventions were equally important because… – The invention of … was more important than the rest because...

Homework Write a letter It is 1851. The organisers of the Great Exhibition want to include the one most important invention that has mechanised the production of cotton. Write a letter to them saying which they should choose and why. Purpose of the Letter – To persuade people Letter lay out – Address etc… What your letter should say Word level – Persuasive words Due = Next Lesson

Plenary 1.What invention made all the changes in the cotton industry possible? 2.What was the Domestic System? 3.What did the Flying Shuttle do? 4.The Spinning Jenny allowed people to produce 8x more ….? 5.What was the Water Frame powered by? 6.The Spinning Mule spun cotton onto how many spindles at once? 7.How did all these inventions affect traditional cotton workers? Did we meet our learning objective? L/O – To describe how the cotton textile industry changed and identify how machines changed the way people worked
