5. Marshall Plan Secretary of State, George Marshall, suggested America provide Western Europe with financial aid. America gave $13,000,000,000 (13 billion)!! Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 6. Berlin Airlift 1948—In an effort to keep the Britain, France & the USA out of Berlin, the Soviet Union prevented these western nations from entering the city by placing a blockade around it. In response, Britain, France & the USA spent 10 months dropping fuel, food and supplies into West Berlin from airplanes. 1949—Convinced that Britain, France & the USA would not stop, the Soviet Union lifted the blockade. The only three permissible air corridors to Berlin. 7. US Occupies Japan After WWII, the US occupied Japan. America helped Japan rebuild and adopt Western ideals, such as democracy and woman suffrage. Japan disarmed and became our ally. Both starvation and disease threatened the Japanese population in the early years of Occupation after World War II. In order to help alleviate the food shortage, the United States donated large amounts of food for the Japanese population. Even so, malnutrition remained a problem.
