2 Noun  Our family is planning a vacation in the Rockies.  Person, place, thing, or idea

3 Pronoun  She was willing to testify.  A word used to take the place of a noun  Antecedent  The noun the pronoun substitutes  When Paul arrived, he was happy.  Paul is the antecedent for he

4 Adjective  After a brief intermission, the puppet show resumed.  A word used to describe a noun or pronoun  Answers these questions:  What kinds?  How many?  Which one?  How much?

5 Verb  The breeze became very chilly.  A word that expresses action

6 Adverb  Judy Blume is a very popular author of teenage fiction.  A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb  Answers the questions:  Where?  When?  In what manner?  To what extent?

7 Preposition  All of the students except seniors must register for classes.  A word that relates a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence  Any word that can fit on the blank is a preposition  The squirrel ran______the tree.  Anything you can do to a box or cloud…(most of the time)

8 Conjunction  Our town has no shopping mall, nor is it about to build one.  A word used to connect other words or groups of words

9 Interjection  Hurrah! The lost kitten has been found.  A word that expresses strong emotion

10 Sentences  Every sentence must have a subject and a predicate  Subjects will always be a noun, pronoun, or proper noun  Cat  Dog

11  Predicates will always be a verb and say what the subject is or does.  The cat runs.  Runs  The dog eats.  Eats

12 Do not write this:  Shots in the arm  People in the waiting room  The surgery was successful  I feel wonderful  Then the doctor  And then the cake  We went to the party

13 Types of Sentences  Declarative  Imperative  Exclamatory  Interrogative

14 Declarative  This is a statement  The frog is slimy.

15 Imperative  This is a command that ends with a. or an !  Get your shots before you go to school.

16 Exclamatory  This is a statement with strong emotion and always ends with an !  The boy is sick from eating a frog!

17 Interrogative  This is a question and always ends with a ?  Is the boy sick from eating a frog?
