1 Adverb Clauses are dependent clauses that act as ADVERB modifiers in a sentence. create COMPLEX SENTENCES because they are DEPENDENT. They answer questions like: How? When? Where? To what degree? They MODIFY adverbs, adjectives, and/or verbs.

2 Adverb Clauses PP 13-25a begin with subordinating conjunctions such as after, although, as, while, when, until, before, because, if, and since to introduce dependent adverb clauses. (Use the AAAWWUBBIS mnemonic to remember them.)

3 Adverb Clauses Introduce sentences: – Adverb (Dependent Clause), independent clause. – While Mr. Powell fought the zombie, our class hid in the gym. END sentences: – Independent clause adverb clause. – Our class hid in the gym while Mr. Powell fought the zombie.
