2 Commitment required from pupils Respect your ability and have HIGH expectations (at least 3 A level grade C). STUDY – 15 hours per week is required. Extra-curricular – ENJOY – but study must come first! Exams the priority! No part time jobs or holidays during school time. Easter should be for revision. Balance your social life with study – your future will be determined by your A Level grades

5 Why do we need a study skills programme? 1. A Levels are a ‘step up’ from GCSE 2. Universities are telling us 3. Teachers (HoDs) are saying 4. Pupils have identified areas themselves

6 (1) Transition from GCSE to A Level 85% of Grosvenor 6 th form pupils said there is a major increase in workload when they moved from GCSE to A level 82% said “there is a major difference in how I think and learn and the skills I require when studying A Level”

7 (2) Feedback from Universities Universities are now saying ‘students entering first year are not sufficiently prepared for university study’ Pupils have been trained to learn for exams. Students ‘read’ for a degree. This implies they have to work for themselves.

8 (3) Feedback from teachers Many pupils fail to deliver coursework and homework to deadlines. Need notes – fall asleep in class Those who interact do best Revision is crammed in last weeks before exam
