2 In Spanish… When we want to tell a friend to do something we use informal (tú) commands… ¡Come! – EAT! ¡Camina!- WALK! ¡Duerme!- SLEEP! What looks familiar about these endings?

3 Commands are used for both do’s and don’ts Lets begin with the do’s (positive tú commands) To state the do’s of most verbs, drop the –s ending of the tú form of the verb. STATEMENTCOMMAND (tú) caminas¡Camina!Walk! (tú) comes¡Come!Eat! (tú) duermes¡Duerme! Sleep! Affirmative Commands

4 Let’s work on Affirmative commands… Open the window!… –Verb Abrir Put it in the tú form = tú abres Drop the –s = abre ¡Abre la ventana!

5 Speak now!... -Verb hablar -Put hablar in the tú form= hablas - Drop the –s = habla ¡Habla ahora! Let’s work on affirmative commands…

6 Drink water!... -Verb beber -Put beber in the tú form= bebes - Drop the –s = bebe ¡Bebe agua! Let’s work on affirmative commands…

7 Negative Commands To state the don’ts- negative (tú) commands –Begin with the yo form and drop the o –Switch the –ar ending to –es and the –er or -ir endings to –as STATEMENTCOMMAND (yo) fumo¡No fumes! Don’t smoke! (yo) corro¡No corras! Don’t run! (yo) duermo¡No duermas! Don’t sleep! (yo) vengo¡No vengas! Don’t come!

8 Don’t buy pizza!... -Verb comprar -Put comprar in the yo form= compro -Drop the o -Change the –ar to –es= compres ¡No compres la pizza! Let’s work on negative commands…

9 Don’t open the door!... -Verb abrir -Put abrir in the yo form= abro -Drop the o -Change the –ir to –as= abras ¡No abras la puerta! Let’s work on negative commands…

10 Don’t drink soda!... -Verb beber -Put beber in the yo form= bebo -Drop the o -Change the –er to –as= bebas ¡No bebas los refrescos! Let’s work on negative commands…

11 Verbs with spelling changes… There are several verbs that change spelling when made into negative commands to keep their sound… 1. Jugar- ¡No juegues! - g changes to gue to keep the hard g sound 2. Verbs ending in –car like Practicar - ¡No practiques! -c changes to que to keep the hard k sound

12 These next verbs have spelling changes… –Either g changes to gue OR c changes to que or z changes to c. Don’t play in the house! - Verb jugar- in yo form = juego - Drop the o - Change –ar to –es and - remember spelling change!= juegues ¡No juegues en la casa! Let’s work on negative commands… -car, -gar, -zar

13 Don’t arrive late! ¡No llegues tarde! Don’t touch the piano! - Verb tocar in yo form = toco -Change –ar to –es and remember the spelling change!= toques ¡No toques el piano! Let’s work on negative commands…

14 More work on negative commands… Don’t eat lunch yet! -Verb almorzar in yo form = almuerzo -Drop the o -Change –ar to –es -Remember the spelling change!= almuerces ¡No almuerces todavía!

15 Eat more fruit! ¡Come más frutas! Sleep 8 hours a day! ¡Duerme ocho horas al día! Te toca a ti…

16 Don’t run in the house! ¡No corras en casa! Don’t open the book! ¡No abras el libro! Te toca a ti…
